There are two approaches to general approaches to selecting topics in writing articles. First of all you can choose to write about something you know a lot about or a field where you're an expert in. Another approach is to do market research and find a hot niche. Read up on some info and regurgitate in your own expressions. What's your approach? or do you do something else?
80% of what I do is based on expertise in home and education related topics (parenting, pregnancy, etc...) But even with a vast source of knowledge, it's important to always stay on top of your niche with ongoing research, etc... So I guess you could say I do both - write about what I know and research what I write about.
I'd say it's a mix too. If I know more about the topic, though, it's usually a lot easier to write it out.
100% Football/Soccer. I enjoy writing about football, I would even go as far to say that it's little hobby of mine, and to get paid for it it great.
I write about whatever people pay me to write about. At the moment it's mostly travel and East Timorese politics.
I'm using either of the two approaches. It's fun and I enjoy writing articles related to my interests or to things that I definitely know about. And it's also good and interesting to earn from your writings. It might not be inline with your interests but you gain not only money but the knowledge as well.
It just depends on the niche that I'm getting into, but you can never learn enough about anything, so it's always good to do your research.
I would say that my work is 30% in the medical field (I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV), 30% politics and the other 40% is about terror. Terror is my niche. I know, it's a sicko niche to be in, and I never freakin' sleep anymore, but it is what it is. Someone has to do it. I'm thinking of outsourcing my nightmares. Any takers?
I like writing about things I know about like affiliate marketing or Jimi Hendrix. But sometimes its hard to think of topics...

I write about family, dating, relationships, home improvement. I have written articles on domaining and internet research, and now keep updated on current research in those fields. But my true niche is beauty and fashion, which is the one I have been doing most of this year.
Ack - so normal. If only I could do that for a week or two! Then again, I'd be having nightmares about Estée Lauder instead of Osama bin Laden, I suppose.
On some of my sites I write about things I like and know a lot of stuff about. But on some I have to do some research to get an article written.
