What do you want in Proxy Hosting?

I may be buying a whole new server in the very near future and offering proxy hosting on it. What features and sorts of things do you want, plans etc.

(Stupid unlimited/unlimited for $2/month will be ignored and flagged)

I know most servers already support it, but you should make sure you allow your clients to run cgi scripts as nph. For whatever annoying reason, GoDaddy doesn't allow this, making cgi proxies pretty much impossible to setup on one of their hosted servers.

Are MySQL databases a must? I figure if i don't install MySQL in the first place, then it saves a process and extra RAM.

What about size, how much storage do you need?

mysql is needed :) if i use some script for ad rotation what i have to do without db ?

but 5-10 dbs are sufficient i think

if you allowing rapidleech then size matters :)

Great, and what pricing for space/bandwidth would be competitive?

You should allow CGI proxies. [I am speaking for myself ;)]

    Some hosting services don't.

One thing about proxies is that they drain bandwith extremely quickly if they are succesful. The worst bit is if you have a host that charges you money for every mb/gb you go over yor bandwith limit so in proxy hosting I like to see someone who doesn't do this, and (even if it does damage your site's traffic) cuts you off when you hit your bandwith limit, because I saw someone run up $800 this way :(

Well, I'm currently on a plan that gives 3GB Disk Space and 60GB Bandwidth and allowed 7 domains for $6.99 a month. It's pretty good, but there isn't really much support. Preferably it'd be around that sort of price but with really good support incase I needed some help...

I think that you need to keep your offers realistic.

Many big well known hosting companies do oversell.
They usually have a TOS in place to ensure these unrealistic limits are never reached though.

But I think the majority of clients that host proxies will at least come close
to actually using the resources they are given.

Promising heaps of bandwidth and support may be a great way to entice new customers, but would it make you a good host?
    I doubt it.
    Bankrupt perhaps though

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'm thinking of buying into clustered hosting (multiple machines linked for maximum power). This will give me extra bandwidth that other hosts can't match on a normal dedicated. And no, i won't be overselling. I've lost hundreds through revenue off crappy hosts and i want to make sure that doesn't happen to anyone else.

I've been punching away on my calculator and these plans are feasible.

    (Proxy Hosting)
    $3 / month = 1gb space, 50gb Bandwidth
    $5 / month = 1gb space, 100gb bandwidth

I won't limit databases or domains, but its your choice how to use your bandwidth and space.

I want to emphasise the quality that i'll provide. I'm not going to oversell, I'm not going to disappear (server has a years contract).

    Any more requests or feedback?

Those prices sound nice, although I would strongly recommend that you give support that is online as often as possible. One of the provious hosting packages I've been on said that they had 24/7 support, but I actually waited over 12 hours for an answer one time. In my opinion you should make sure you can give as much support as possible. :)

Yeah, ill definately hire someone to help provide support. Although instant messaging support is ideal, its not going to happen unless your a huge company. Ill get a ticket system set up. Replies to tickets will take a maximum of 6 hours. No longer.

On the other hand, our server should be running so smoothly that you don't need to file a ticket :)

    So, the wraps so far.

    500mb storage, 50gb Bandwidth - $3/month
    1gb storage , 100gb Bandwidth - $5.50 /month

Ticket support system, reply within 6 hours - will usually be sooner.
PHP, MySQL, the bunch of them.

    Anything else?
