What do you use to run your site?

If you're a writer, do you have a website, what have you got on it, and what platform did you use to build it?

I want to update my site and I'm interested in what platforms others would recommend. I don’t need anything very complicated – just some general information and a showcase of some writing samples. I’ve used Drupal before, but I’m not sure whether there is something more suited to my purposes.

    Any recommendations?

    Um, dreamweaver and html. :)

Your official "I'm a writer so hire me" site doesn't need to be complicated at all. Just throw up some basic HTML pages using whatever editor you like you're done. You can either create your own simple site or buy a template.

I'm creating a new website right now and using Wordpress. The hard part was finding a template that didn't look so bloggy. You know the ones with 3 columns and widgets all over the place.

I'm not familiar with Drupal so I can't compare, but I chose Wordpress because it isn't complicated. Once I get the template tweaked the way I want it, adding new pages is simple, like typing them into Word or even Notepad.

I use Wordpress for pretty much everything these days; you can do anything with it. I still have one with static HTML. Both work just fine. If you're not going to update much, go static. If you plan to update it a lot, want to attach a blog, etc. I'd suggest Wordpress.

Wordpress and Joomla. There are a lot of templates that you can use for both platforms - in fact there are a lot of free templates that look really good. All you need to do is just tweak it a bit to suit your needs/style.

I have tried a few engine, I think WordPress is the best for me, it is easy to change template, layout, widgets and a lot of plugins you may use. You may modified a certain template when allowed by the designer (copyrights issue).

Drupal, Joomla and alike are full blown CMS, so you might be using a sledgehammer to crack a nut that way. WordPress is comparatively slender and, in the particular scenario you describe, can cut the mustard with all others. :)

Try wordpress or blogger. Platform is not the issue to have successful site. It is also depends on how your promote it.

Wordpress and EasyMemberPro for my copywriting membership site.

Not being overly technical, these two work quite well for ease of update and sharing information.

I use Wordpress, you can see my website in my signature.

The hard part was finding a template for a writing company, since most of them are all for blogs.

i mostly use one plain html or php static page and then add a word press or blogspot blog to a /blog subfolder and some times a directory like a /link folder :)

I second to that. Both Wordpress and EasyMemberPro are easy to use.

I have written a free eTutorial about installing wordpress on your own url and uploading a theme. I've included free theme sites that don't have malicious software in the zip file. Host info is in there, too, as updates can be a pain.

Anyway, WP comes with a lot of bells and whistles. It's kind of tough to get work if you don't have a website of any kind.
