Maybe it's because i'm a n00b, but I used a CMS, which has 99.8% of the coding done already.. Of course the drawbacks are that you can be limited to the themes available, and it's not as fast and slim as a 'real' site...
    But perfect for us n00bs..

I am using Netscape composer. Keep it simple (just as notepad). I think Dreamweaver is probably the best ( I have seen a nice demo of this tool) but until now Netscape composer works fine for me.

I use SiteSpinner because it's only $50 (dramatically cheaper than Dreamweaver) it has more flexibility than Dreamweaver in my opinion, and is much less of a resource hog than Dreamweaver, plus they also offer a freeware version called WebDwarf for those who don't want to shell out $50.

Do yourself a favor, learn some html, use notepad, and a free FTP to upload pages to your webhost.
There are many ftp softwares available.
    Best of luck :)

:D Well, it is the most powerful text editor, that's true.

@OP: If you just want to crank out a personal site, anything is OK. If you want to turn out professional grade work, you will use a text editor. mikkom and I like Emacs. That or Vi(m) will provide the most productive work environment. There are other nice editors out there, gedit and cooledit come to mind.

Frontpage and whatever MSFT is calling its replacement are terrible. Dreamweaver is for designers without html/css competence. It turns out crap for code. Do not even think about using its really sorry javascript. But, if professionalism is not an issue feel free to use DW.

    cheers,

    gary

Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator. Or you could just get a blog and focus on your content instead of the code. ;)

i guess for those who want to use a CMS to group their articles can only stick to the CMS.

those who want to blog but still want their domain, can FTP their blog posts from blogger.com to their own domains. :)
