there is thought that this will make the site stronger in rank and also the ills of those on your shared ip or server are said to hurt your site

I've heard that argument, and I have to disagree. I have a dedicated server and my best performing site is on a separate shared server.

@ Insomniac: don't go for yahoo geocities, their sites are most of the time banned in China (and since the traffic from China is exploding, that's not a good idea). Not sure if we are talking about the same plans anyway, but I could check the issue myself when I was living in China (for two years :D).

First plan offers a very reliable uptime. I have one site on this plan, and minus minor glitches with the sql connections, there's never been a problem. In particular, if you plan to have static pages, that's the web host you want. IMPRESSIVE uptime. However, technically VERY limited (with a stupid php mail limit of 200 per day, no htaccess, no direct access to databases, no shell access, etc ... So, this is for very static websites only).

HOWEVER ... don't go for the free domain, or maybe should I say ... go for it and move it to godaddy ASAP (there's a delay before you can do such athing). Best thing would be to buy your domain at godaddy and your hosting separately. What you don't want is to be stuck with your web host because he detains your domain name (yahoo outsources the management of domain names at an Australian company, Melbourne something ...).

I just you consider buying hosting at hosgator.

I used godaddy hosting and it is not good. On the other hand, hostgator is cheap, has great support, etc

I would say the best one to use is Adobe Dreamweaver, but it is too expensive :(

Godaddy is also a better option for hosting.

transfering the domain will be diffucult. Most hosting companies do not accept transfer of a domain younger than 2-3 months. Inıtially I would recommend registering the domain from the hosting co you choose.

I use vi or 'cat >> file.html' :) And I "include" the ad code so I don't have to type it...had to add that because otherwise I don't see why this thread is in the Adsense area.

Do godaddy, but good luck wading through all their bs. You know how some people surround their "submit" button with ads to get accidental clicks? That's how their entire website is designed. Their checkout process is like trying to find the exit in the worlds largest casino ...almost impossible

But sadly godaddy is probably the best, even with all that crap in the front

I use bookmyname as registrar (EUR 5.00/year/.com), and I have some dedicated servers with each one 100 Mbps and 250 GB HDD, for EUR 20.00/month.

I build my sites from scratch, with a good text editor, and for graphics I use Paint .NET.

Well, it's been working very well ;)

I use bluehost as hosting service.
As for design, i have three tools I use most.
ConTEXT, text editor with syntax highlight for PHP/HTML
TOPStyle 3 CSS editor with wysiwyg. (lovely when you have to choose color palettes)
XAMPP My local machine webserver (apache+php+mysql) the best place to mess up with code.
Plus, I cant live without my Web developer toolbar for firefox.
    Cheers,
    Guido

edit: I use also free scripts I like to custromize for my needs. I'm lazy, so there is no need to write from scratch something that is already done.
