What do you think of when you hear this domain?

I'm just wondering.. I just purchased a new domain and have some ideas rollin' around in my head for it, but I figured I'd ask for "first impressions". Okay. Ready? Good.

    helpnewbies.com

What first came to your mind? If you were to visit a site with that name, what would you expect to see on it? Fire away. :)

A computer help forum. It'd be tough finding people that will have the patience to answer questions, though. :p

More than a forum make a FAQ website

With so many forums around, very few little people are willing to participate, unless you pay forum posters to start up.

the first thing that came to my mind was a faq/help site for new members of a community (which is implied by the term newbie)...

so i guess you can create a faq/help site for forums...

Everyone talks about technology/internet related site, but the term "newbie" is used more often on the gaming scene than anywhere else, mostly on MMORPGs. I think you should check that direction as well.

In either case you are getting to oversaturated markets

I agree, you could create a FAQ directory. You can let people contribute and cover everything from buying a computer to using AdSense.

Good thoughts... I was thinking along the same lines as you all, but wanted to make sure other people's thought process went the same direction as mine. :)

Now monetizing it from an AdSense view... would it better just to go with one small, narrow niche, or have little niches within the site through the use of subdomains/directories? I hear most say to stick with small content sites devoted to one main thing.. why is that?

See, right now, I run a general article directory.. I was hoping to not just have "another article directory". This needs to be revolutionary! :D

I think most people here would lean towards thinking of computer help just because of the nature of this forum. ;)

Something you might be able to do with it is create a site similar to www.allexperts.com, where people sign up, answer questions that are asked, and readers could ask questions on any topic. AllExperts is owned by About.com now. Personally, I think allexperts is terrible, and there's an awful lot of garbage on there. Coming up with a better site like that covering a wide variety of topics could have a lot of potential. :)

My thought would be another tutorial site or a FAQ page. Something with information on a particular subject.

As far as a forum. It would be tough. I am sure at one point or another you might need a posting service like it was stated before.

I think it's a good domain - says exactly what you do. It does not neccesarily tell "at a glance" how you help them but maybe that is what you're after. Memorable though and that's always a good thing.

So what's in it for these "volunteers" at these "ask a question" type of sites?

I would also go for a FAQ type site, maybe also try video tutorials as an upsell.

You could do a search on google for louis allport. I think he has created about 25 .exe ebooks with embedded videos, covering webdesign, website traffic to adsense etc.

Most of them promote their businesses, similarly to how you would do it on a forum with a sig link or in a resource box on an article submission site. They just answer topics in the field they register to answer them in, there can be multiple people, so it's not like they have to answer all of them.
