What do you think of the Facebook app that gives your exact location?

I couldn't believe it when my son showed me the results of a Facebook app that users download to their mobile phone - it continually updates a person's exact location at all times -- e.g. Tescos.

    Burglar's dream or what?

I wonder how many kids will install this on their parent's phones so they can keep from getting busted skipping school/etc.

I'm not sure how much of a burglars dream it would be as you would still have to case the joint out and make sure there's nobody else at the place even though the owner of the phone is gone. I would think they would have a higher rate of success with things like social network updates where people let everyone know they're going on vacation or otherwise going to be away for awhile.

    Never thought of that lol.

Yeah, but think about it - criminals will already have their targets in sight. Now all they need do is check Facebook to know where their target is and how much time they have to do the job... and that doesn't usually take long - 10 minutes is enough time to do a thorough ransacking and make a getaway.

I still think there are "better" ways to keep tabs on a mark. I suppose burglars aren't the brightest bulbs on the tree though, given some of the episodes of Cops I've seen I could see some nitwit getting busted when someone checks to see who has been watching the victims location.

I really think this has more potential to be exploited by teenage and college shenanigans than anything else. :)

McFox is right about burglars liking it. I don't like the idea of someone always knowing where I am. Someone having a tab on me constantly is quite creepy to be honest although i'm sure there is a whole load of fun to be had with this.

I wasn't exactly an honor roll student when I was a kid. :)

Someone looking to break into your house is going to be most concerned about physically being in the area and making sure nobody is home. A phone giving away someone's location is nice and all, but it doesn't tell the burglar whether you left your dog outside, if you have company (in-laws/etc) staying the night, whether your neighbors are having a BBQ next door, or any number of other things that might cause them to look for an easier target.

I think you guys have been watching too many James Bond movies. :p

Not sure if its different to the UK but with my FB app on my iphone, i have to manually tell it to "Check in" to give a location to where i am, without doing this it doesnt show where I am which was admittedly one of my worries regrding this option. So i can say at least that im not worried about this app, as i definatly wont be using it like many people i know who are obsesive with FB and letting people know about each bowel movement and hic up they do throughout the day :)

Why would anyone want this installed on anything that would transmit there location?

Some ppl are just bending over and saying sure we don't mind being monitored 24/7 with regards to every aspect of ones life. Sounds like false freedom to me.

Who really has more freedom, the person who lives in fear that everything they do will be monitored and judged, or the person who just does whatever they want no matter who is watching ?
