    Stalins version (1958) A SINGLE death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.

    It probably helped him sleep at night..

    Stalin died in 1953, so it is unlikely he was issuing quotables, stolen or not, in 1958.

    As to the quote, it is a sadly accurate observation. As a political philosophy, it is a bone-chilling guiding principle in light of his bloody regime. Stalin isn't the only one to feel this way...perhaps he is trying to explain why leaders find it so easy to become mass murderers.
