What do you think of Internet Marketing college degrees?

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by Kevin Mark, Mar 25, 2013.

Lots of colleges are starting to offer Internet Marketing degrees. Do you think those are worth anything in the real world? What do you think the employment opportunities are for people with those degrees? What do you think the future looks like for them?

I don't think degrees are going to bring much value to the table, when it comes to Internet marketing. It is mostly about your skills and hands-on experience.

Traditional degrees are better suited for traditional jobs such as doctors, teachers, psychologists, and so on.

I'm a strong believer in education, and I think a college degree in Internet marketing is a good idea if you wish to have a career in IM for the rest of your life. Right now it doesn't matter there is no need for the degree, but over time when more people get into IM maybe a degree will make you stick out from the crowd? It also depends on your goals, if you want to work for a large company then I would definitely say a college degree in IM is a wise choice. There may even be advantages now if you are looking for a marketing job somewhere, as companies are now starting to hire a lot of in-house SEO people rather than outsourcing it to freelancers. This is what I see in my area, as SEO is becoming a very competitive field. 5 years ago, it wasn't like this. 5 years in the future will be a lot different and I would expect to see a lot more competition. If you think a college degree is useless in IM then you don't realize how competitive the field will be.

Any college degree is good. In the sense, you get the core classes (that all university students must take) out of the way. Later, you can pursue another degree in something with jobs. However, it's always better to major in something with jobs from the beginning. Of course, there are always jobs somewhere for any college degree, but it's a lot easier and less problems if the degree has a reputation for jobs (doctor, nurse, teaching).

As far as internet marketing goes, you don't need a degree. But I would always encourage people to get some degree for reasons listed above.

I agree. Getting a degree is good, so one should always aim to get that diploma/degree. This doesn't guarantee success, but it does help to have taken those core classes.

I don't think Internet Marketing as a college degree is a good idea. A Marketing degree is enough to give you knowledge you need as far as the marketing side is concerned. Much of what one needs to go into internet marketing is already online. It's a matter of reading through and putting into action the information.

My two cents. Have a good day!

Such degrees are needed, especially if you work in a corporation. In addition, it allows you to gain some theoretical knowledge. Of course you don't need a degree to do something on the internet.

They're worth a lot, all college degrees are. But I've been advised not to get one simply because they are expensive and paying back the student loans would be bad.

College degrees are a valuable asset but there are mentor/teachers who will teach you a lot faster than a 3 or 4 year course.

The degree will not make you money - it is how hard you are prepared to work that will make you the money. Get the knowledge but be prepared to take action.

Well my answer is yes, it is very good to come through proper channel, during degree duration you may test what you gain in lectures and classes in practical field by doing some part time internship.

I went to college more for the experience than for the education... I studied business with a concentration in marketing and management and was able to learn a lot of valuable info to apply to my online businesses but if I had the choice I would have went for Internet Marketing. I don't think it's in anyway necessary but if you want to go to college for the experience and you're interested in making money online then I think it's a great choice!

In the long run, it always pays to do things the hard way. Majoring in basket-weaving won't cut it these days.

Any degree is designed after lots of research, the information provided in the course is valuable and reliable, you can believe on this and you would focus because you have gotten valuable information.

In forum, on one point, people have different views, which don't give your answer completely, but it is not with any course if you pursue.

According to my vision college degree is good to have an idea about the subject I am dealing with but it is not the whole.. May be a person without degree is more efficient technically and logically than a person with degree.. and that depends upon interest and experience .. if anyone feels interest doing such things one can have many helping aspects to get a guidance..

The only problem I see with this is "updates".
While coursing a university degree, you need to follow some pre arranged study program. By the moment you finish your degree, all you've studied will me mostly irrelevant.
    My thoughts.

I don't think it's necessary to go to the IM degrees. The most IMarketers learning it alone.
