Are those avenues like social media, bookmarking sites, forums, blogs etc. etc., still effective?

It appears that social media is more important than ever. The Farmer Update appears to have impacted sites that contain a lot of duplicate content (like artice directories).

Is the farmer update effecting the article directories themselves or just blogs and sites that use these articles? The top article directories still have a high pr.

All the article directories took a big hit, lost most of their rankings. PR doesn't reflect anything other than itself.

Social media is one avenue, but its not like they changed the algorithm for ALL links. Instead of using article submission "farms" as they call them, focus on relevant, high quality links. Much harder to get (blog guest posts, press releases, etc), but much more effective and still unaffected by the algo change.

There is no happiness for the person who does not travel. For Indra is the friend of the traveler, therefore wander!
