What do you think about this religious video about atheists?

I noticed this in the top 100 Google Video chart positioned at number 6:

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5479410612081345878

Personally I thought it was pretty messed up and am not sure if it's some sort of spoof. Where I live about 40% of the population don't believe in a god and I am not bothered by religious people provided they: don't try to convert me and don't make decisions that affect me based on their religion. Normally I keep quiet about religion, but seeing a video that is more or less training the viewer to convert others based on some really dodgy information is troubling - especially as it is so popular.

    Any comments? :)

I think it's 28 minutes and 37 seconds long. Wowza, did you watch the whole thing? Why?

I don't care if religious people try to convert me, as long as they have really big knockers that sway gently while they talk to me.

Religious fanatics scare me as much as fantatical Atheists. Stop trying to convert me, and stop trying to convince me God doesn't exist. I reserve the right to start believing in God. :D

You wouldn't want someone you love to spend eternity being tormented in hell, would you?

Don't know what it is Will, but my best pal Kevin is far right of me (and I would venture, most folks on this board) and he makes me bust a gut on a daily basis....goddamn. This line supplants some of his best.

Is it something in the journals you lads subscribe to?

Now, watching the tape, it just saddens me that two beings - crania filled with neurons - devote their minds to such childish myth and sophistry. Well, sophistry is too much, since their arguments are ridiculous. But I am reminded of something Danny deVito said in "Tin Men," and I paraphrase - but when you push that hard, you're not a Christian, but a salesman for Christ.

Ahh... the essense of humor... a question for greater minds than mine.

I've thought about this topic more since reading Stranger in a Strange Land, because Robert Heinlein <choral music>Robert Heinlein</choral music> prematurely announced victory over the topic in that book. This is doubly odd, not just because of the undeniable genius of Heinlein, but because his character Lazarus Long is perhaps the best and at the same time the strangest example of true redneck humor in literature.

I am going to take the cowards path and not tackle the larger and more interesting question. Instead, I will share a few thoughts on redneck humor.

The essense of redneck humor involves stripping a conversation of its vestigial civilization -- taking every action down to the basic level of fulfilling some direct need. It's all about simplifying life down to its real meaning, down to the things which make us all tick on a less societal and more animal level.

It's something you see in the comedy of Richard Pryor, a true red neck. It is noticeably absent in the work of Eddie Murphy, who is not a red neck. Strangely, you can also see some of this in the work of Jerry Seinfeld, who is also not a red neck.

I see two other aspects of good red neck comedy. The first is that it must be self-effacing. This is why the Homer Simpson character surprised most folks by being more humorous than the Bart Simpson character. The show really took off when they switched from Bart to Homer as the main character. Homer, albeit unintentionally, is a guy every guy can relate to.

The second is that, to be good comedy, red neck humor must be somewhat positive. Red necks are feeling a lot of pressure these days from people who strongly dislike them. That makes humor more difficult. To achieve comedy, you have to block out that anger and focus on the things which make all people the same. Hank Williams Jr. ignored this rule in A Country Boy Can Survive, as did Merle Haggard in Okie from Muskogee and The Fightin' Side of Me. The results are less comedy and more expressions of anger.

I dunno, the only thing I read anymore is The Economist. :D

I'm sorry, but people who are like don't deserve to be called Christian. True Christians invite people to the faith and love of Jesus Christ, not attack them with threats of hell and torture and "force" them to convert.

Exactly...to be honest there is no evidence anywhere in the Bible that mentions eternal torture in hell. :p

When the Bible was in its native form, there was one word used in place of 'hell' and 'grave'. When the translators translated it into English, they replaced the Hebrew word, 'sheol' with several different words including 'hell', 'grave', and 'pit'. How can someone come up with three different words from one word? I'd provide a link to it if I weren't too tired to search for it :D.

Also, if God truly is love (and he is), why would he stand by as his creations are tormented for eternity? If he is fair and just why would he allow someone who entered 'hell' thousands of years ago to burn for eternity along side with someone who entered a few days ago?

Except that the book of Mark was not originally written in Hebrew...

I cannot agree with your premise. That makes discussion of your conclusions somewhat silly.
