    Hello, I am wanting to create a trading website. I have heard from a good friend of mine that magento is amazing.

    I dont know any PHP, but he said that there are plenty of plugins that can help me with what I need.

    What do you think? Is this a good route for me? I am willing to learn a bit, as long as it wont take me forever.

    Magento is great, I have done a lot with my Magento site. I am have made it work with plugins and without even changing any code besides the template. It uploads to google base and google grabs the products fast as long as you have it configured properly.

    zs cart is not nearly as powerful. it looks user friendly but can not do most of what Magento can do.

    Well there are lots of CMS like OScommerce, joomla-virtuemart, zen-cart etc. for developing ecommerce website. Presently I am working for developing one ecommerce watch website using joomla-virtuemart. But Magento is above all the CMS.

    Magento is the best compared to all the other shopping carts. following are some of the features;
    * highly flexible coupon and pricing functions
    * comprehensive filter functionality (filter products by)
    * multi-store as standard
    * ability to create and edit orders in admin
    * large number of high quality modules via Magento Connect
    * no need to hack core code
    * impressive template system

    I was working on Magento for almost 2 years and finally scrapped it and went to Zen Cart. Magento has great potential but it is very expensive to run due to the hosting you need. Also, even though you should be able to add extensions with no problem, it always seems to break the cart and then custom coding needs to be done.

    I run magento with simple helix for $20 a month and I have a couple of other sites on there. hosting cost is minimal. If anyone can't afford to pay $20-$50 for hosting maybe your business model isn't so good.

    The problem is running out of disk space. If you have a lot of products to add and are running multiple stores on 1 install then that is where it gets expensive compared to other hosting companies. For someone starting out and has only basic programming knowledge I wouldnt recommend it.

    Magento is a great system, but its not for everyone to use, modification can be a pain in the ass.

    Magento is very expensive and is really good for an enterprise software. I would recommend something like osCommerce that is free to use and customize. osCommerce has a great forum and community behind it to help you. There are also thousands of free contributions for almost every function that you could want in your store.

    Used Magento a few times on different sites and found it quite easy to set-up, manage, etc. Mods/hacks can be very time consuming/difficult.

    Magento is good but it's too slow. Uploading the CSV file is also not very easy. But it all depends upon your requirement.
