Not a problem because I normally surf with my speakers turned off just in case! I do object to endless loops of music that start over and over again as you flick between pages on the same site. I also object if the music starts 20 seconds after the page has loaded visually.

Has to be the visitor's choice whether or not any audio is played.
And because I normally have my own music playing, hate background music, mouse-over ads with sounds, etc.

And as published I never put banners with audio (although are best paid) on my sites.
Also I have a site with music videos and audio samples, but are played only if user clicks on "play" button

By neglecting your visitor's preference while forcing an audio add because one pays more for that kind of stuff, the website owner should be aware that he may end up being the only visitor of his site, and click his own ads to earn.

It's alright if it can be turned off and it has a purpose.

I design Flash ecards that rely heavily on music, but that's the purpose of the site. I don't run background music. The music is part of the cards. And it's a choice the user makes.

I don't like ANY audio on the site. I might be listening to some music or surfing at 3 in the morning. The latest thing I want to hear is an annoying background music

It can be funny when all of a sudden a banner starts playing music on a website,
and you've got 15 browser tabs to check where sound is coming from.

That could be embarrassing at work. ;)
And maybe you are "forced" to close all 15 tabs

Oh, yeah, that annoying sound sometimes drives me so mad that in a flash - what do I see? - taken over by dispair, I've closed all my tabs.:D

Oh yes, those emoticon flash ads..
Nice emoticons, scarey when your eyes are watching some if($row->cat_id != $cat) {} kind of stuff closely and they bump when you expect them least :D

Music on a site is annoying and pointless, like having a book with a theme tune -- I've never heard it implemented well.

Green light for online radio listening, if kept shut unless you really want to push play to start it.
Online radio is good, when it's not available in your area other than that way.

I don't mind some cool button over sounds, as long as they are subtle. but any music that auto-plays when I hit the page is instantly annoying

I own a very nice sound system, thank you very much...

Its like walking by an outside billboard thats activated by sensors, and the thing yells at you "Buy more crap", then the mechanical monkey jumps off the billboard and beats you with your own wallet!

Music on sites should should only be there if its what your trying to communicate. Audio is not a design, When your primarily LoOking and reading!!!

Audio on websites make me think of the person who put it there saying something to the effect of "Im ultra coolio and you the browser must have an awfull music collection, so your going to have to listen to my plagiarized bad version of tech/hardhouse or something....

I'M an audio person, so I may have been a little long winded with this post.
    but it was fun.

Let's revive the long forgotten thread:D

Anyway, I have to admit audio on websites annoys me a great deal...If it is functional, somewhat I can take it. Otherwise - no, thanks.
