I am doing a term paper, and i would like a general opinion on what people think about artificial intelligence:) . here are some of the factors that you might consider. AI might become smarter than you  , and it could also do your dirty work :D . there is also the fact that it has the history of what happened in movies. this is only semi true. if you would like to help me, you can send me your opinions via the poll.

    --thanks!

I wish I had AI that works instead of the 5 employees that i have to shout at everyday.

AI is the new future for employers, at least they will get to keep there voice. :D

I read a great novel years ago where AI-enhanced humans did all the work, got the good jobs, the travel etc. The so called "normal" humans had free food, accommodation etc but were constantly bickering with city officials because the allocation wasn't enough. In the meantime the workers got wealthier and lived nicer lives.

In that scenario I'd go for enhanced and productive - or else owning the enhanced... Joe Blogs lost out big time.

thanks for all of the feedback! this will really help me! I would appreciate it if you would use the vote though, or clearly specify in the post what you would vote for. sorry if this sounds negative, but otherwise i can't be sure what you would have voted for, or if it is ok with you if i use your opinion in my paper

    Sorry, I couldn't resist. :p

I think you should write about it. It would be interesting to talk about your views on where the future is headed, but just be sure not to dramaticize it too much.

He's a good basketball player; but doesn't have a temper on him? I don't think he'll ever win the NBA championship.Yes, I know its an artificial intelligence question. That's the joke!

But a vote depends on so many things! It can't be a simple yes or no, it all depends on how it evolves, how it impacts on us as individuals, how power is divested...

AI has been over hyped for the past 50 years and will continue to be over hyped for years to come. Computers continue to get faster - able to store more - but not much more "intelligent". Certainly no more intelligent than an encyclopedia compared to a notebook.

I will get excited when a computer controlled bot can vacuum my house as well as a human (Roomba? You gotta be kidding me!) being paid minimum wage.

I thought the movie was pants.

We're still decades away from any artificial intelligence that's worthy of the name. Getting software that learns from one situation and then applies it to a similar situation, making connections with all the different areas of life we deal with everyday, that would be something to see.

Humans are great at reacting to the unexpected, so I think minimum wage jobs will be safe for quite a while.

that is the whole idea! if we knew how it would evolve we wouldn't need to vote. but because we don't know what will happen to AI, so I am gathering the general opinion on what you think will happen to the AI. for the better? for the worse? or will it just be?

First off, I am glad to see AI used to describe something involving intelligence again not a show that manufactures pop stars. I think you are effectively asking do you want software that can continuously optimize a system so who would be against it. Please apply it to the stop lights...errr... traffic signals around the world.

To get back off track, I do think AI shoots too much but he seems to be blending in well since being dealt to the Nuggets. :D

Having the sort of artificial intelligence that can take in more information and use it more efficiently that a human brain is hundreds of years away, may not even be possible.....so it's not really an idea at all...

already robots can take in more info than us, the challenge is to make it do things with the info as well or better than a human. but still it is an idea, and it might not even take that long! who knows, some genus might just have some bright idea now, and we will have them in less than 5 years. i know it isn't probable, but it is possible.:)

Really? Examples please. What does that mean anyway? More info? Remember my example about a notebook vs. an encyclopedia - is an encyclopedia really "more intelligent" than a blank notebook?

Do not under estimate the cognitive capabilities of a 9 month old human compared to a robot. I will put money on the 9 month old in comparison to the "robot" in just about any competition. Match a bot with a 3 year old human - then it is all over for the bot!

for example in vision. if you have a camera attached to a supercomputer and then had a contest to see who could find a small shape in a room, the computer would scan more of the room than the human. but if you are talking about learning, humans win easy. so far robots can find patterns, but can't feel or have conciseness. in that respect, i'm with you on the 9 month old. and your encyclopedia vs. notebook analogy, neither are really intelligent, neither has the ability to think. all they can do is show you what has already been written. they can't put their own observations into the text, the only way to do that would be to have the writer put more info into the notebook, or make a new encyclopedia. you see what i mean? if you had a blank encyclopedia that would put data into the pages as it learned then it could be called intelligent. but try to make a learning book.

and besides if you had a learning book, you could make a robot learn... then who would your money be on? i would put mine on a really smart robot that could really learn. why? look back at the begging of this post and add to it that a computer would be able to make sense of what it is seeing faster. if you want an example of this, try to do a really long math problem faster than a computer. lets assume that the problem is already in the computer, because it is the one who came up with it in the first place. today if we had a race against you and a computer you might only win because i had to type the whole thing into the into the computer.
