What do you recommend as an ecommerce platform.

I am looking to start an ecommerce business and have been told that Magento is the best platform out there.Any thoughts anyone. Is there anything better?

I would recommend you to go with Magneto certified partner which helps you in a better way if you are finally taking a call for Magneto.

There is no such thing as the best platform. What may be the best for some may not be for others.
You really need to do your homework properly. When I say properly I really mean it - spend lots of time doing research and it will pay off big time. I've worked with many e-commerce sites and a lot of them fail, or fail to make enough money and one of the biggest reasons is that the shopping cart or ecommerce platform they have does not suit their business!

When looking for a shopping cart consider things like (in no particular order):
- Your budget
- Your expertise and skills
- Capabilities of the script
- Ease of use
- Support offered
- Products you will be selling
- Your business as a whole
- Your goals with the e-commerce site and overall business direction
- Marketing - how are you going to promote the site? no traffic = no sales. Do you have the resources for marketing (money and people/skills)?
- Finance - for how long can you afford to operate before turning a profit?
- Your online and offline competitors
and more.

Magento may well be the best option for you, but definitely consider as many other options as possible. You might find that a $100/month hosted shopping cart works better for your business.

there are so many open source in the market
but i would suggest go for prestashop , i m using it from last 2 year and the new version is beautiful

Though there are lot of ecommerce platforms available but Magento is exceptional. My clients feedback is almost awesome about their Magento experience!

I suggest you try interspire shopping cart service pack. I'm using this in my ecommerce site and it works great for me.

You can also try magento and Oscommerce if you want.

look there are so many open source are available in market i have never work on megento so i don't have that much knowledge but for e commerce website you can also create in jhoomla.

 

not many people understand the magneto field. if you have very good understanding of magneto field you can then go there. i have seen many people who go for magneto without knowing anything. so my suggestion is yes if you know it well.

 

i feel,nowadays opencart is best and is picking up fast, but at the end comfortable factor counts. you might give it a try, its jst 5 minutes install and ready for online shop

 

Yes Magento is really good option for shopping websites. It provides an efficient platform for selling products and its security system is good. I would say that magento is meant for eCommerce sites. You can try zencart too.

 

New PrestaShop 1.5 has all the same functionalities, what Magento has. But PrestaShop is simpler and easier. I myself recomending PrestaShop as this is the system what I know very well
