What do you expect from paid web directories?

There are many directories on internet, free and paid both.

We all submit our sites to many directories... but only few go and submit in paid directories.

I want to know when you submit to paid directories what do you expect from them?

    1. Do you expect huge traffic coming from them?
    2. Fast approval and get listed in directory, that's it?
    3. Increase in your pagerank fast because of submission in high PR directory?

    or something else?

paid links are not bad until google finds about that and reduce their importance to almost 0. after that your paid links will be good for nothing.

Matt Cutts has made it clear a review fee is not the sole criteria that makes a directory submission a "paid link". He details the criteria in the following video.

I wouldn't pay for a directory listing unless it was from a well respected directory in my niche or a very good general directory. I'd expect that the page where I'll be listed would come up in the search engines for some of the terms on the page. Those directories should give you a few hits a month, but more importantly pass some serious link juice.

I would expect a lot of pages in the paid directory are indexed. What makes a paid directory different than free directory is the content. People tend to spend more optimize the description / keywords they submit to paid directory. When I used to run paid directories instead of free directory. I even go an extra mile to do keyword research on the site submission to make sure there's enough keywords in the category / single site page so the page will be index by Google / Yahoo.

Good point and thanks for sharing the video - there are a difference between spammy web directories and real ones - for instance BOTW, Yahoo Directory, Family Friendly Sites, Business.com all have great PR and have never been penalized by Google

For free directories, if they don't have income, how do you expect them to be well promoted, to have many backlinks, fast approvals, etc?
Generally someone makes a free directory, is very enthusiastic for a few months, then it becomes semi-abandoned, while paid directories are long term.

And funny you should mention "fast approvals"
Did you semi-abandoned your directory as well?
We're waiting for 6 months now for you to approve AMRAY

Oh, BTW we have removed you from AMRAY, ABC iT and Best Directories List

I'm also a bit surprised, if this really affects the brilliance on the site?

the paid directories usually don't include bad web links, but in my opinion the paid directories should include the link in permanent way, you pay once and have the link for ever

there are not much difference in paid and free directory submissions. some free directories even approve submitted sites in 24hours or so. the only big difference would only be the pagerank of the paid submissions. so make as many free submissions as you want and maybe with paid directories as well.

Perhaps too optimistic there, even if a paid directory only offers permanent listings, theres no guarantee that the directory will exist even 12 months later, ive seen it many times.

Im not talking of fly by night ones either that are deliberately set up from the beginning to try and get as much in as little time as possible.

Even paid web directories set up with the best of intentions might end up closed down way before expected.

You mean like paid directories have high PR and free low?

Well that is why I love forums..... I can learn something new every day.

When they realise that its not like that it will be like a punch to the stomach.

Some people, somewhere must be preaching to the newcomers that millionaires are made everyday online.
