I have available ads space on my site but I don't know how to promote it. What do you people do to promote ads space on your sites?

I do very little actually :(
it's always something I mean to do, but never find the time when online
I do have a "click here to place your site" spot on our side column, but I don't have an advertising page like some do.

To be honest it is hard to sell direct advertising unless you are receiving a lot of traffic. I have even found with a few high traffic websites I own that direct advertising is hard to keep filled and I make just as much with a combination of Google Adsense and a premium CPM company.

Adsense was created for people like you... so they could fill adspace. Too bad the spammers are so heavily entrenched.

Yep I think Google even needs to take a stronger stand on adsense. I think they will end up loosing a lot of customers in the coming months due to their low clicks which is a direct result of so many low quality websites. I stopped using google adwords as much as well because of the low price per click as well.

The most common way is to sign up with a text link site or to advertise on webmaster forums and forum related to your niche. I found very little success selling directly from my sites. I have sold a couple of ads from advertise here but not near as many as if I search out business.

Does it really work? The only thing I can think of is sending them emails but I'm not sure whether those companies will read those or treat them like spam!

Did any one had luck with contacting companies/sites directly by emails?
