What do we think of self harm?

"Self-harm develops when the child who has become attached to those who have inflicted pain and suffering maintains that attachment by inflicting pain on himself."

"self-harm behavior is usually regarded as symptomatic of serious mental illness, often associated with a history of childhood trauma such as abuse or neglect."

of a slightly (read; greatly) less severe nature. Interesting how you seem to always defend a certain type of behaviour by comparing it to something not nearly as bad.

I think the main difference is that the point of drinking and smoking isn't to cause harm to ones self, Something which cant be said about attaching knives to chains and slashing your back to ribbons.

Actually, one of the most important traits of a religious fundamentalist is that he believes that he should 'sacrifice' for his religion. In fact, it won't be far fetched to say that every religious fundamentalist is both a sadist (when it comes to fighting people from other religion) and a masochist (when it comes to torturing himself to prove his worth to his own religion). And, the sad part is, this kind of stupid practice exists in other religions too. Morons.

Its their life and their way of living. Do it harm me or you in anyway?

How about UFC when they hit the hell out of each other with bloody nose and faces?

Going by your previous logic on this forum i think anything anyone says could "proove" [sic] that they are anything (usually a zionist jew), as long as it gives you an excuse to put your fingers in your ears, run away and get out of justifying ridiculous, and sometimes barbaric, behavior.

The point of that isn't to get hurt either. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

Seriously, Can you not tell the difference between participating in a sport where you may get hurt and attaching knives to chains and thrashing your own back to ribbons in the street?

Do you think that is normal behaviour that a healthy human being with a sound mind would do? Simple question. Answer it.

I do see that there's a potential tie-in between physical self-harm and religious fundamentalism, and would just like to offer the observation that neurologists, neuropsychologists and psychologists believe (with some overwhelming evidence for it) that there's also a correlation between religious fundamentalism itself and mental illness. Religious fundamentalists, when studied, have hyperactive temporal lobes exhibiting similar brainwave patterns to those seen in temporal lobe epilepsy (and of course have a significantly higher incidence of temporal lobe epilepsy than the general population, too). Yes, I would hope we're all agreed that physical self-harming is associated with mental illness.

Well If broken chin, bloody nose, broken ribs , hitting the hell out of opponent etc.. are sport maybe what those guys doing is a way of religious sport too?

How can you justify when a human being getting hit by another human and loose consciousness as "sport" and then when the same human hitting himself in front of thousands of spectators to show how tough he is, you call it "mental illness"?

You can call it "mental illness" if they do it alone inside a dark room.

And what these shia guys doing is more like a show, its nothing personal and they wont do it alone , usualy in groups in front of thousands of spectators just like those 2 guys fight inside a cage in UFC in front of thousands of spectators.

Actualy hitting too hard that blood come out is porhibited by most shia clerics.

Your contrived excuses are becoming embarrassing mr_2. Is your defense really that this could be considered a "religious sport" in an attempt to get it in line with things like boxing? Seriously, is that your argument? Or is it an intellectually dishonest attempt at obfuscation? (look it up)

Boxers try to avoid injury at all costs. This, On the other hand, Is a willful and deliberate attempt to cause horrific injuries to ones self and to cause massive blood loss. And it is that distinction that makes this an act of self harm and boxing a sport.

All you had to say was "yeah it's crazy" and move on. Yet because these people are a member of the same club as you, you feel compelled to defend behaviour which, if it wasn't tied to religion, Would end up with them committed to a mental institution.

And this is an important point. It demonstrates the leeway we give religion and how people automatically assume, even if they aren't a member of the religion, that it deserves special treatment. If they were doing this because their team lost or because their girlfriend dumped them you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would say anything other than that they are bat-shit crazy. yet because it's religion, it's given a pass, And even defended.

Seriously. Look at the picture, Really look at it, and really think about what they are doing. Is that really something a mentally stable person would do?

whether i agree with bloodsports or not, the point is, one is to DELIBERATELY harm ones self and the other isn't. that is the simple distinction that, for some reason, you are having such a hard time understanding.

Answer my question. I bolded it to make it easier for you to understand. let me know if you need me to draw you a picture.

By the way, If you want to make an anti Semitic, race-hate rant could you do it in one of the other numerous threads where that stuff goes on, thanks.

In regards to the UFC they don't go into a fight hoping they get hurt or bleed. They go into a fight hoping for no injuries and a win to make a ton of money to better their lives. It's supported by people who pay to watch the fights who love to see the strength, power, and skill some of the guys have.

That's my take on it... as for the guys cutting themselves up for show, I don't really understand it other than they feel they're putting themselves closer to God?!?

lol why should i give a sh*t about some jerks hurting themselves?
There are millions of emo's who cut themselves on daily bases..

If they wanna show how tough they are by hitting themself so let them be .

How about David Blain 61 hours inside an ice block? isnt it DELIBERATELY hurting himself knowing that staying 61 hours inside an ice block gonna hurt and a lot? or maybe he isnt mentaly stable too?

"The workers chiseled out the last of the ice creating a small hole. David is anxious to get out. He finally does by the help of his stage men. As the audience cheers him on, he is unable to walk on his swelled legs, and he has the look of shock. Blood clots are on the paramedics mind as he gives his girlfriend a kiss. A blanket is wrapped around him while "David... David... David..." is screeching in his ears. "Something's wrong!" he stutters. "My mind doesn't feel right from not sleeping." His feet give him pain from the three day stand. He's put on a stretcher and taken away to the ambulance. Simultaneously, David Blaine gives his fans one last smile."
