There is a market for everything. Reaching that market is the hardest part (in my opinion). Just remember that fighting against the big ones is hard, and that entering over saturated niches is also hard. But if you want my opinion, people like free stuff (specially free money, so any type of "get paid to" can be profitable if you market it correctly), and nowadays, their attention span is short, so remember to have quick, easy to understand content. PM me if you want to know about promotion, marketing, traffic, etc.
New ideas are harder and harder to find, but if you can get that niche you are well on the way. I think this days people like community features which are important to bring people back to the site again and again.
People want entertainment usually. If you can make a website that really entertains people then they will come back.
Right about now in the US, people want to find a way to keep their home from being foreclosed on. Which means there's going to be people who want info about where people are losing their homes so they can take advantage of that.
when going to a website i expect quality content, easy navigation, - i like interactive maps and things.. good set of graphics (easy on the eye).. contact the site easily,, a real community feel. I believe there are many website markets out there where some people arent providing this top end quality and even if you enter a market with competitors already operating in there (oligopoly market structure) you'll eventually come out on top.. i have done this with various community/travel info style sites, i have only done it on a small scale of local areas where sites offer info on local activities etc. I try and come across as professionally as i can compared to old men that have little web knowledge who come home from work and do it as a hobby.. although this is a hobby for me too
