What do I need to learn to create a site like this?

    Hey all,

I do love a challenge - so for all off those in the know, what would i need to learn in order to create a website similar to www.etsy.com - something that allows users to start a shop and sell things? Any recomendations of where to start would be much appreciated.

I have basic knowledge of dreamweaver & basic site design, but little about programming.

If you work as a designer/programmer what would you charge roughly for a site like this?

any software anyone could recomend that would make the 'shop' part easier?
Thanks so much for any help!

I also want to know the answer to this question, so I am posting here so i do not loose this post :)

Also, an idea would be maybe an auction script that allowed shops? Just an idea...

    Try oscommerce: http://www.oscommerce.com/

It's a free, open source software that you can use to create a full featured e-shop. You can customize it in any way you want to make it meet your needs.

Just noticed that etsy allows people to buy or sell. I still think I would start with osCommerce and get someone to customize it, though. :)

Your cheapest bet would be to buy a premade CMS type script.

The thing about Etsy is that it's one of a kind. I am by no means a programmer but a strong knowledge of PHP/ MySQL/ Ruby etc. (database stuff...) would be needed.
Having someone customize OsCommerce for that type of thing would be a pain.

You might try and start by making your own classified site like craigslist.org and then go from there.
You could check on this forum for a programmer or check out sites like:

    elance.com
    getafreelancer.com
    scriptlance.com
    getacoder.com

All are bidding sites for programmers. Definitely will not be cheap though.

Ps. How did your 31 day challenge go? Did you make any money :)

thanks for the help guys. Yeh I have tried guru.com and the quotes were way over budget at the mo, so I wan't to learn parts on my own or perhaps design front end and hire someone to help with the other stuff.
Perhaps joomla along side virtuemart and then get someone to tweak to allow multiple shops? hmm..
    - eruct - 31 day chellenge was fun and I learnt alot, but yet to make my millions!...
    thanks again

Buy a Auction based Turnkey website.
Simple to use! But then again, I like the simple life. :p
