What do I need to know before buying a domain name?

Are there certain things that make a domain name better than others (example: .com vs .net, use of hyphens, etc) If find an available domain name, for example besttraveldestinations.com do you think it is better to find a domain that doesnt have the double letter.

And one last thing. If I register 3 domain names with godaddy and am hosted on hostgator, how do I get all 3 domains hosted on gatorhost. Isn't there something special I need to do, or will that all be handled by gatorhost after I purchase a hosting package.

For your first question, a domain name you purchase (assumed existing not new one) can be better if it had established for a long time, has reputation, a lot of index, and high Page Rank. I am not sure about double letter but short and concise domain is much easier to remember see mine www.thankuamerica.com why not www.thankyouamerica.com? Who's care!

For your second question, you can visit the manage domain page at godaddy. Then unlock all domain you purchased, put your GatorHOST DNS in the space provided by godaddy. Then, check the Authorization code for each of the domains you purchased at Godaddy. Then You go to HostGator and add domain to your host.

Hope this help! :) Feel free to visit my page and write me some question to ask more. I will from time to time visit this page and answer your question!

I think you should consider shorter & meaningful domain name and buying it from a reliable registrar.

In case you are planning to serve a specific location it would be recommendable that you include the name of this location in the domain name. If otherwise, meaning you are going national or something like that then do not even think of including a name of a location as prospects from other areas will never click on your site.

Some say that the shorter the domain name the better. Keep it plain simple and the like. Sometimes even long and specific domain names turn out to be successful. I think that your niche will help you determine whether you need a long domain or a short one. The thing is both types are brandable if you conduct proper marketing and promotional actions.

Asking for suggestions here on DP is a great way to find good tips or maybe suggestions. Once you clarify some points and eliminate some bad alternatives you could like start a poll and see how people appraise your favorite choices.

I advise you not to spend big bucks on a domain. Save some money and maybe spent them on building up your brand and advertising your site.

The respect rankings if I can put it that way is as follows
.com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us (country extensions)

try to avoid .ws, .tv, .biz, etc.
