My homepage has many bitmap pictures, which is know is bad cause they take miles too long to load. So i tried changing them to jpeg but the new quality was a joke, What do i do. Is there a format where you dont have to compromise quality for file size ?

Is there a program which shrinks bmps ? any one have any ideas ?

I use jasc paint shop pro to convert to jpg. You can get it for about a tenner on ebay or £400 in the shops. ;)

Jasc Paint Shop is also what I use but it's not £400, it's only a £70 or so download from the official site. It has all you need for day to day stuff. You can slo try the Gimp, it's free and allows you to choose compression values to come to a good compromise.

But search Google for online tools, you should be able to get a jpeg without noticable quality reduction at a fraction of the filesize. Netmechanic.com has such a tool.

Just open the bmp and go File > Export -> JPEG Optimiser and try and make them just under 30K or so.

Make sure you use the smart resize option in Jasc rather than pixel resize if you are making the images smaller in physical size.

ok guys i have made the piks smaller and uploaded them and now it seems like most of the jpegs on the page wont automatically load. They load if you right click them and then press show picture, which means its linked right. Im unsure why they're not loading ?

If you've got the money get hold of Photoshop, you can't beat it for web optimised graphics.
Sometimes second hand copies are sold on EBay if you can't afford the full price version.
