I submitted my site to Google, Yahoo, Bing and many other search engines a couple of weeks ago. Right now I'm just getting backlinks from similar sites and updating the site once every 2-3 days with new content. What else should I be doing while my site is on the search engine waiting list?

The Federal Trade Commission should have more closely studied past mistakes before approving Google's acquisition of DoubleClick. Google is becoming the new Microsoft, only much worse.
Make sure your web pages have been optimized for targeted keywords that don't have too much competition. Indexing on Google is easy. That will happen aanyway. But there's a difference with being indexed on page 32 and being indexed on page 1. You still need to build backlinks with the other traffic methods such as social bookmarking, Twitter, article writing, etc.
