What do CB vendors look for while hiring a copywriter?

A note for the mods: I think this thread belongs here because it is a specific question for clickbank vendors.

I have a few products but I'm not satisfied with the conversion rates. I want to get a great converting sales copy before I go all out to get affiliates to promote my products.

I understand that the conversion ratios increase when you have a lot of affiliates who spread the word out with positive reviews. I don't have many affiliates and most of my sales are made through my own content sites.

But still, I'm not satisfied with my conversion rates.

I want to ask you CB vendors that what do you guys look for in a copywriter while hiring him/her to get your sales copy written?

Some recent launches whose copies I like include the scar solution (and cellulite product by the same guy), International-incomes, playmybaby, etc. There are some other products that i promote as an affiliate and they have consistent 1:25 to 1:40 conversion rates with organic traffic! I can share that information with someone who's ready to guide me about how to find a copywriter who can help me get great conversions.

So how do you guys find a "perfect" copywriter for your CB products?

I have tried around 3 copywriters for a product I have and still not satisfied with the conversions. I spent quite a lot of money on them.

I am open to all kinds of suggestions. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post here. I'll appreciate your suggestions :)

Some guys spend 20k on copy plus commission depending on the copy's performance. Personally, I think this is insane. I write my own copy. If you don't think you're capable of writing good copy, I don't believe it-anyone can. Take a look at some of your favorite sites and base your copy off of theirs. There are also tons of outlines available that you can follow. The beauty of it is that you can split test until you find some winning copy. It's not the easiest thing to do, but if you put the time in and split test, you'll come out on top, trust me. Plus, it's a lot more rewarding when your copy starts killin' it. So, I suggest giving it a go yourself before you pay someone else. Best of luck.

Yes it can be really tough to find a good copywriter and for that reason it will be hard to get someone to give you their secrets.

I normally write all my copy myself and tweak it and change it while you are testing.

Testing is the key and as long as you keep testing with good traffic and keeping note of what does and doesn't work you will get there.

Other than that look for proof that conversions have gone up from a copywriter.

When you read through their copy ask "Would you buy it?"

    "Why does it work?"

A lot will always depend on the quality of targeted traffic which you are sending to your offer / sales page.

If you are sending very low quality traffic, you can of course expect to receive very low conversion figures.

On the other hand, if you are sending highly targeted leads to your sales letter...your sales pitch, as supplied by your copywriter, your conversions should increase as a direct positive result of this action.

Of course you can write it yourself (as the above posters have suggested) and test your changes constantly, to see precisely what works and what doesn't work. The downside to this is that this testing period, if done properly, will every time hurt your conversions and your bottom line profits - but if you can afford to take that loss whilst learning the copywriting craft, if you are prepared to pay that price to get the copy just as you want it, well good on you for trying.

The most cost effective thing to do however is to work with a professional copywriter from the very start. It's much more cost effective and will line your pocket with a lot more profit which afterall is what you immediately want to see, otherwise you wouldn't be in this business.

Your copywriter will understand how to take your prospects emotions on a journey, representing your product in the best possible light and hitting on those buyers emotional buying triggers...over and over again virtually compelling your target audience to buy instantly - which is exactly what you want from the start.

If you've been using to date so-called low cost copywriters who charge a couple hundred bucks or so, there is your problem. If they were any good they would be charging a great deal more for their time and professional copywriting expertise.

It always pays to invest in the best.

    Best,

Try to network with vendors who have sales pages you like in your same general, or specific niche, and ask them who they are using. Sometimes it is the vendor themselves, and they are getting feedback from a group of their friends in other forums to polish their page. All that experience is often given for free amongst friends. It sounds like you are e-mailing copywriters whose work you respect, so outside of that, you may need to do what I am suggesting to get the "perfect" writer. Chances are you can become the perfect writer with some help, because it is your product, and you know it best.

Not everyone is a copywriter or know the how to writing a good copy. Its better to spend 10k on a copywriter and your product converts, which will eventually get your 10k back + much more extra. Instead of doing it yourself and spending long hours with next to no results.

Its a matter of how you want to play the game, if you want to be among the best and go to the bank with fat checks, you need to hire the best. If you are a good copywriter and can write mind blowing copy that converts well, you are probably already rich ;)

Anyways, most people that do the writing themselves, fail miserable. (thers a reason why copywriters charge so much, because people are willing to pay so much for good copy) Hiring an experienced copywriter will increase the success rate.

    Thanks for the insight guys.

@onlinemoniez: The first thing I did was write my own copy. Then I had a copywriter take hints from my key points and write the copy. It doesn't really work bad but I want to improve it further. Again, I'm split testing but its easier said than done. Its very hard to split test everything so I still have to rely on a good copywriter to a large extent.

@Chris: I do write my own copy first but its not easy for me and it takes a lot of time before I'm satisfied with it. Then the results talk of something else :) I'm in touch with some good copywriters atm and hope things will get much better soon.

@MarkAndrews: I can't decide whether a copywriter is good or bad by looking at his/her price. I know that some good copywriters charge $5 - 8K but the fee alone can't be the deciding factor for me.

@cyclo394: I don't think a competitor is gonna tell me who wrote his copy. Its crappy anyways :) I won't even ask. I'm slowly improving the copy.

@web_18designer: You are right that not everyone can write good copy. Even if an inexperienced person does it, it will probably not work good. I'm now in touch with the ones who can hopefully make it work.

i've worked with vin montello and he's been fantastic. not just by writing copy but also in providing invaluable advice on products, marketability and others. i personally believe copy is a great investment, even a small increase in conversions will work wonders for your bottom line.

Vin Montello is one of the best around, of this there is no doubt.

If you want to hire him, your investment will almost certainly not be less than a ballpark figure of $20k.

Grabbing one of his students could be a good bet with your copywriting investment starting at about $5k.

    Best,
