Between 2 full time jobs, I only have time left for programming. Here's a stripped down v.1.2 template that should be easy to understand and modify: http://www.astanda.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=96 Its all in Smatry tags with the least HTML.
No dramas said the lamas, I'm a big fan of phpld of course! I earned money with it and it helps me survive here. WEll it's the same here, imagine phpld is Win XP and you're Linux, you arrive on a forum and ask others what is the best OS out there, then if people tells you that it's not linux you give them infraction and red rep :
First off, I never gave you an infraction. If I was going to give infractions for people announcing other scripts why would I only target you? It doesn't make any sense to me mate. If you have a problem with me you can do it in private rather than making false accusations here. That's not what this thread's about.
wow, my little script gets a mention here... thanks! anyway, doesn't matter which script is the best. in this world, being the best isn't the most important. it's being the best marketed that is important. just look at firefox and ie. who cares if firefox is better or not... ie is ruling the computing world.
As we are talking about some of the best scripts that we have experienced. I would like to attract the attention towards netref, see it here: http://www.netref.net/
Very well put daboss. That is exactly how it is, and what I've been trying to say. Despite the title of this thread the original intention wasn't to discuss which is better - or even to say mine is better (despite what some may think) it was to compare the features and show that there are alternatives that have the functions you might be looking for. Free alternatives at that.
Free - not always good. There's always something you have to pay. Either $$, recip links, fame and glory, etc. You've gotta give something back, otherwise the developers have no motivation to improve their software.
The SBD Directory Script is free provided you keep the footer link intact. If you want to remove it (and when a directory gets big - most users will), there's a small fee of $15. Both options provide me with an incentive. Although there is motivation there for me to improve the software, I get it from other places as well.
I find it so disappointing that we can never have an honest discussion of the various scripts and their good points and weak ones without it turning into something other than an exchange of ideas. The one line posts of 'xxx script is best' are misplaced and not particularly helpful. While upon my initial read of both this thread and the Snowblind's full article I knew I was reading a marketing piece, I found it well-thought out and honestly reported. I don't see anything wrong with the title of the thread or conversation that followed. That was until the army arrived to promote a particular script. Whether the owners and supporters of the big 2 want to admit it or not, there are many who are simply looking for something else. I would love to see an honest evaluation of the scripts available to provide information folks need when making their decisions on which script to use. But, I don't believe that can happen here as conversations about the different scripts always seems to degenerate into something less than informative. I am currently using one of the big 2 for my site and would consider myself a customer (I bought a full version) who is not liking the recent trends of things. I won't go into them here, but it takes more than programming a script and offering it for sale to make a good product. I admit that I am currently supporting the efforts of the Cantufind team. They are listening to comments made on these and other forums about what is missing/needed or would simply be nice to have and are adding it to their product. The beta release has been delayed due to several of the suggestions made, which in my book is the way to go. I for one am so sick of having to make mods for what should have been included in the script in the first place. "but aren't developing any of their own ideas" was said by another poster with regard to the Cantufind team. Ironically, just by implimenting the ideas of others they are creating a product that is quite new. Many of the most saught after features that are simply deemed not worthy by the others are being implimented as an out-of-the-box feature rather than a mod to be applied like some sort of band-aid. So in that respect, maybe they don't have "their own ideas" but they are certainly listening to those who are running directories and wish there was something more/different/better as an option. I am glad to see that there are several others who are also working on their own directory scripts. I have always believed when there's a bit of competition, everyone wins. If only we as a group of "professionals" could have an honest and open discussion of who offers what and how the scripts being offered truly compare.
Can anyone build a comparison matrix for directory scripts, like this php framework comparison : http://www.phpit.net/article/ten-different-php-frameworks/ I think if someone can built something like that, then perhaps we all can see something that more usefull and objective. One feature might be very important for someone but might less important for others.
I'd be very interested to see a writeup like that with directory scripts too. It's been a while and no replies so I assume no one's gone off and done it - or knows of one that already exists? IMO it should include both free versions and paid if done right.
