Most of the directory owners use PHPLD and some other well known directory scripts are

    a)Sitesift
    b)esynidcate

    and many more

    I am using PHPLD in www.jeffbrowninc.com .

Our own directory script for www.worldsiteindex.com and www.artweblinks.com
It has been powering WorldSiteIndex for over 3 years serving pages to thousands of visitors each day. Along the way it's been improved to meet the growth of WorldSiteIndex and to take onboard requirements of other directory owners using it.

Therefore I'd have to say it's working extremely well for us.

I have created more than 20 directories with phpld. I have looked into others but always come back to this script. There is a large number of templates, mods and support for it and it keeps getting better with each release. The only problem is the cost of add-ons needed to make your directory truly complete. I do run one directory with indexu script and am fairly happy with it, but the support was lacking.
