I just wrote an insightful article about the secret that directories don't want you to know. It explains why submitting your site to hundreds of directories is pointless and completely Un-useful.
I really hope this article saves you time so you won't have to submit your site to many directories.

So basically it's an article built on "hate" for the directory owner? the little guy trying to spread some link love to sites or webmasters that may have had no exposure otherwise?. Great job!!!

It's not an article on hate. I don't hate anyone. And it's not link love, think about the directories that you have to pay for. Besides creating a directory is not hard, I've done if before and it's pretty easy, I don't know what people complain about especially when they are making money off the ads that are placed on that site.

Well think about it, most directory submitters are "ad-phobic" so they will not be clicking on offers or even anything adsense related. Come to think about most submitters will be web-centric folks that will have ads-disabled installed on firefox and wont see any ads at all. So the lowly directory owner won't see any benefit for his review of said link submission.

A directory doesn't have a high ranking in its index or inner page at the beginning.

Give it a break. How can you have page rank in every page when you just started a directory business and start promoting. Its a start, it will get its inner page ranked soon.

Next, if a directory has PR 0 Today, it might have PR 2-3-4-5-6 in the future. You can not avoid those directories. There are lots of serious directory owners who has PR 0 at the moment but it will gradually increase.

IMHO, I don't agree with your statement.

    Thanks

Well yeah it's sad for an owner, but it's like me getting a script that makes a site just like myspace, and expecting my site to be like myspace. It just won't happen.... If you are going to create something be creative, don't copy other's work... There are tons of directories, most of which people believe will gain them a good backlink when most of those sites only have a 1 PR page or sometimes not even ranked.

    @digitalduke :
That website has been up for a LONG time... I don't think it will get any better. It's been up since August 6 2006.

    Summary of your article:

"Submitting to directories is pointless for gaining PageRank."

Wow. Captain Obvious. And by the way...you didn't write anything in that article that would qualify as something "directories don't want you to know."

Wow. Captain Sarcasm, thank you for the not needed post.
Use your brain please, it's not just there to make your head big.
Think about it, a directory gets money from the ads they put on their website if less people start submitting they websites they will start getting less money.
I find it really funny that everyone here is mad about it yet it's just an article and people take things too damn serious, if you don't like it then just skip the post and skip the sarcasm and act mature.
It's funny that most people here are mad because I posted this here where there are tons of directory owners... it's like me posting in a blogging section "Blogging is stupid, don't do it".
There is NOTHING valuable about submitting to a directory unless the directory is really famous. And really famous means all their pages have at least a rank.

    1. You can't really claim that
Google has made 'several' changes to their algorithm and we can't say for sure if 'domain/homepage' pagerank doesn't contribute.

I have a website that got to PR3 JUST by directory submission and hence I think directory submission has it's importance. At best I would say you are trying to spread some ignorance :p

My point exactly, this guy is not related to directories, and he finds the article useful because it will save him time from going and submitting to hundreds of directories like many of us did when we first started our websites.
There is no point of having hundreds of directory sites, it would be like Tom from myspace Making 1,000,000 different websites all with the same point of Myspace.
It's not as if these directory sites added a little something new, it's all the same, submit your site, get approved, get a bad cheap link.

I think I'm gonna call a SEO expert on this one. Hopefully by tomorrow he will be here if he is not on at the current time.
Ssandecki a person which I greatly admire has said this many times, and he does SEO for a living.

Good article ,with sound logic. The vast majority of directories have no benefits to either those trying to promote sites or people looking for a site. Those who tell you they do are usually up to their neck in the pay for inclusion business. This is an industry build on smoke and mirrors and its long past the point where everyone should recognise them for what they are.

I do disagree with one point

is far to generous to these folk. 99.98% would be closer.

The OP's article focuses on the common lack of PageRank in directories' inner pages. Why do so many posters forget that PR is a Google thing only? There are other search engines (Yahoo, MSN, etc.) that don't measure PageRank, but do measure link popularity. Part of that link popularity comes from the directories you submit to.

Excellent comment, i got some top rankings and PR for many sites in past with quality directory submissions. I would say that directory submissions will help a great deal. Its just around $20-30 for 500 PR3-8 quality manual directory submissions. In what way we can feel that $20-30 is wasted. Its improving your link popularity and keyword rankings. That's more than enough for the money you spent.

I would be surprised if the other search engines algorithms were not very similar to that of googles in the way they deal with with the inorganic links such as those found on these pay for inclusion directories. They do not call it page rank but you can bet your bottom dollar it ideals with link popularity in a very similar way.. Failure to devalue these links would give their main competitor a significant advantage in producing relevant serps..

I am beginning to think does PR really matters now? If a directory has good volume of good traffic but without Ranks, should we submit to them? isn't this possible?
Directories are supposed to be for both Submitters and Visitors. Submitters looks for Rank, Visitors don't.

The main thing Owner should concentrate on Quality web listings, if there is content, they must be quality too. Directories can be great business and good source of income for some, but I think some give up in short time because I think it takes lots of devotion, time, money, effort to make a good one.

    Cheers
