I learned that if you set your budget to $100 a day just to push a lot of ads for like an hour and then have your internet go down for a prolonged period of time that, you'll be almost $100 lighter when your internet comes back :)

After my first campaign I thought that I should have given the cash to charity, at least it would have done some good BUT then I started to look in to Adwords in more detail and realised that the only way to make it work is to experiment until you have the correct formula for your individual success.

From my first campaign I learnt that you should never give up on something if it dosen't work the first time.

    Completely agree.
Relevance : Always match the keywords with the ads text. Spread the keywords in many ad groups (so you have many ads but all relevant to your keywords).

Test : Can you beat your best ad (CTR) for the same campaign ?

If you advert is converting, but your cost per conversion is too high, reduce your bids - you'll get less clicks, but they'll be profitable!

OK, so it's obvious, but you did ask!

Do not hesitate to delete non performing keywords right away. Do not throw more money at it and say I'll wait another day. Those keywords will still suck the next day.

    I learned...

    - My keywords were way too general.
    - I needed a pay per click ad written specifically for each keyword.
    - Being the #1 pay per click ad was not necessary.
    - Conversions are all that matter.

I could go on and on. Who didn't learn a ton from trying their first pay per click campaign?

Don't be afraid of losing money to start with. But have a philosophical attitude about it: it's money well spent as a learning experience.

(and if you're lucky enough not to lose money, so much the better!)

    yes !!!

And its HELL of a work to write ads specific for products.

Means...in a perfect world each product SHOULD have its own ad, keywords, landing text. Get specific, specific, specific.

Eg...just for ONE certain brand of a graphics cards i could make 50 or 60 (or more) Ads with specific text for better Quality Score...its A LOT of work...

Yeah, it's tedious. It can be overwhelming when you consider all of different keyword variations you need to do and that each one should have its own pay per click ad. Just start small and keep working on it. It will pay off though.

After several months I am still losing money. Keywords are too expensive. Something is not working here. Conversion rates are too low. I guess I need to find better keywords that cost less...

Hello tkg. Since you have doing this for several months, I'm sure you know a good bit about pay per click ads. I have created a reference you may want to browse through. You can view it here.

    http://www.PayPerClickReference.com

If you like, post one of your most important keywords and the ad written for it. You should also consider posting your average position and bid (if you don't worry about competitors seeing them). I'll take a look at it for you and see if I have any suggestions.

I'm about to jump into adwords and I'm wondering if those ebooks with titles like "The $7 secret" and "Two-minute profits" can simply be summed up in what you just said. If they can, are they actually worth buying?

A good book MAY give you tips on how to write good adverts (it may not be good advice - there's plenty of advice on here if that's what you want). Alternatively, look at magazine covers - they've been attracting people's attention with a few words for decades, and it's a good place to look for inspiration...

I can't really comment on affiliate-type marketing; I manage campaigns for clients, but the basic principal of both should be:

1 Pay less per click than the traffic's worth
2 Improve your Quality Score to get more traffic

1 will ensure that you make a profit, 2 will increase it.

How you improve your QS is discussed extensively on here, and I'm not sure that these books will have a great deal to add (feel free to contradict me).

I can't see a good case for buying these books...
