10K is not a big amount. Lets say you have a site that makes 500 USD a month from adsense. That would be 6000 USD annually. Even if we consider a conservative Price to Earnings ratio of 10 (earnings yield of 10%) ..the site would be valued at 60000 USD. Of course there are other factors too... this is just a layman approach. Like a tradional business. the price that anyone is willing to pay for a website would depend on its earnings , sustainability of the earnings and growth potential. The main problem in valuating websites is the future is very uncertain on the internet and things change too fast. A site making 5000 monthly may be making 200-300 next month if dropped from a SE index.
Hosting cost vary...... we are spending about $350.00 per month. BUT...... if someone has a small website they are just starting out with you can't beat Godaddy Hosting for $3.95 p/m.
True. And if you want to experiment with your ideas for sites, cheap domain registration fees for each domain and a reseller acct (starting from $4.95) where you can host as many sites as you like is a good option
I start off with my sites on a really cheapy reseller account which costs me £40/year and as they start to become more popular I change their host to a server which doesnt have any downtime. It's like when you start growing a plant you might just put it in the plantpot to begin with but eventually you'll stick it out in the garden when it's big enough.
Costs me £6.81 everytime I setup a new one which is just the registration fee, I have a dedicated server so the only overhead is the monthly fee for the whole server.
I use LowCostSpace.£24.99/year inc domain name, full control panel,Fantastico,etc.etc.Its very good but being phased out in Nov. Slightly off topic.....can someone point me in the right direction where I can read up about the reseller thing and how to host more than one domain without opening a new account everytime I set up a site.
Indeed, its built into my server so you basically get a cut down admin account with certain limits I can specify e.g. 20gb space, 500gb bandwidth etc etc. Most hosting companys that use Plesk or Cpanel can offer it although Cpanel isnt supported on Windows server at the moment if thats what you need.
I set it up and sold it in 99 ish, the company that had it had great plans for it. The site was pulling in about£1000 a month in standing orders for adverts on 3 month contracts. They screwed it up, ran it into the ground then closed down. 18months later I got an email asking me to renew the domain. So I did, and bought it back for about £6 The site now runs a small (70 page) Directory that will be expanded sometime soon.
I've heard alot of people say good things on this board about http://www.asmallorange.com I don't have any personal experience with them but plan on trying them out shortly, currently the only host I can recommend from a price/downtime/customer service stand point is http://www.pro-net-hosting.com $10 a month will host a ton of sites for you As far as reading up on it, do some searches for cpanel and whm hosting which is one of the more popular methods currently, host review sites, etc. __________________
Hositng: 3 dedicated servers - one with 1&1, 2 of my own in different datacenters. one more coming on line in US soon. hosting costs: 120 GBP per month. domain costs: varying but approx $10 per year. I use numerous registrars (why I'm not sure).
