    Hi,

What determines if your adword ad will be placed on the right of the search results or on top of the search results? How much you pay per click?

Yup, how much you pay plays an important role, but also your CTR and landing page Quality Score

Based on your Quality Score and CPC bid. However, only top-ranked ads - ads that exceed a certain Quality Score and CPC bid threshold – are eligible to appear in the top positions above the search results.

    * The historical clickthrough rate (CTR) of the keyword and the matched ad on Google; note that CTR on the Google Network only ever impacts Quality Score on the Google Network—not on Google
    * Your account history, which is measured by the CTR of all the ads and keywords in your account
    * The historical CTR of the display URLs in the ad group
    * The quality of your landing page
    * The relevance of the keyword to the ads in its ad group
    * The relevance of the keyword and the matched ad to the search query
    * Your account's performance in the geographical region where the ad will be shown
    * Other relevance factors

    Taking from somewhere.

In your compaign settings, You can set position preference as per your wish...But anyway you cant determine , whether your ads should be shown in top or right...Just you can prefer the high place..but your Cost per click should be high to be shown in high place....

Pay-per-click depends upon your content and daily search volumes......Just get inside adwords & you will know everything...

What determines if your ad is placed on the top of the search results, 3 things:

    1) The keywords you choose
    2) The amount you bid per click
    3) Your quality score (based on many factors)

So say on a popular keyword with perhaps 25 - 30 adwords or more users chasing it those accounts with history and a good ctr/quality score on the particular keyword could pay 30 to 40 cents a click whereas those just entering with no history/ctr/quality score could be paying $1 - $2 a click?

This is the thing that has always baffled me. I advertise in a very focused local area and have a lot of competition. I am a small operator but can regularly get my ad up into position 3 or 4 or below but always page 1 simply by tweaking my keyword bid by a penny or two, occasionally in position 2 or even top and I am being placed alongside the really big operators that no doubt have huge budgets.
I have also noticed that google averages out my keyword bid to around a penny under what my actual maximum is.

This proves it allows the minnows to swim amongst the sharks without fear of getting eaten alive.

I imagine the big players are sitting in front of a screen all day tweaking bids up and down to achieve the best positions without overspending.
