For some apps I use MySql. For other apps I use an xBase style database that I crafted.

I am looking to convert everything to MySql if only because of the ease of accessing from PHP and the relative ease of accessing from Perl. However, I would like to find something which is significantly quicker when is comes to handling multiple transactions over a large database.

I suspect, like you, I will never stop searching for the best all round solution.

Mysql as well. I like it because it's easy to administer with phpMyAdmin, and most unix servers have both as standard applications.

For a web application they are all good.

Did you try PostgreSql ? Is a little bit slow than Mysql but is more complete. When I tried I had a pleasant surprise.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 for me. I use it for a ton of things relating to software development like information storage, data mining, etc.

as i said open source solutions dont work in enterprise (i use mysql and postgres on my personal servers tho before i get flamed) and thats from experience, the company i used to work for sunk millions into trying to switch to open source

in the end they stuck with microsoft/sap/oracle infrastructure, why? because it works and contractors get their job done quickly and on budget

I work in a company what is using mysql clustering with a GREAT success. so the thing with "opens source is not working in database enterprise" is a myth . We have more then 10 server (razor blade) with clustering and etc with more than 1000/querys /second and are working fine ...

I dont want to start a flame ... but the solutions depends by who implements it not by the tools you used.

I use mysql for my sites. I did oracle at uni and liked it, but its not really something I could afford to use for most stuff.

ok ill put this into perspective.

would you run the National Grid on MySQL??

now as i said alot of money was sunk pursuing open source solutions, i also said i use mysql5 everyday on my servers but in enterprise i worked for (im not talking small here im talking energy company with half a billion euro proft last year) everything is different, database goes down = millions are lost => powerplant has no gas to run on
