Honduras isn't as bad as it seems. Take a look at the Government Corruption Index.

    http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/gov_cor-government-corruption

DR could be a good place to run an internet based Business. A condo there could be a great 'office' and headquarters. Great place to bring the clients as well.

Honduras is approx. 25% dependent on remasas (remittances) from the US. A slumping US economy should make things cheaper down there.

One thing about Honduras is that you can have an adventure of a lifetime on a shoestring budget.

If you get off the beaten path, it's possible to find a building lot for as little as $2,000. If you pitch in your own labor, a traditional adobe house with ceramic tile floor and spanish teja roof can be built for as little as $5,000. In addition a 2 manzana (3.5 acres) piece of land suitable for agriculture could be for as little as $1000. The main investment you will need and time and desire.

Southern Honduras along the Pan American highway has some nice towns. San Marcos de Colon located on the Pan-American Highway offers a nice climate at 5000 ft and is also a coffee growing area located on the coast.

    http://honduras.com/hondurastips/english/choluteca.htm

Off the beaten path in Honduras includes Olanchito, Choluteca, San Marcos de Colón, Siguatepeque, Guimaca, Julticalpa, Valle de Angeles and San Juancito. Punta Raton (fishing town) and San Lorenzo (port) may also be interesting.

    You can say that again.

A DP member just hit me with a PM about living in Honduras and I've decided to share the information here.

$1000 is more than enough to get by and you should be able to get a visa to live there by providing the adsense checks as proof of outside income.

You can rent a nice house in the capital for $375. In a smaller town expect to pay 50%. The capital has the highest costs. Renting a small apartment or room should cost $100-$200. Col. Palmira is a good upscale international neighborhood that's in the center of the city.

I can tell you that its better to get your paperwork done in Honduras. When you are there find an attorney to handle it. If you can't speak spanish just have a freind translate for you. No big deal. There are also poeple that do 'transmite'. They are not attorneys but they wait in line for you and handle what needs to be done.

Just research what documents you will need to bring to Honduras with you

    Build a House in Honduras

A good project for someone that intends to stay in Honduras is to build your own house. The budget will depend on where you intend to build. Land in the capital Tegucigalpa is quite expensive but you can find a small building lot for around $10-15k. In a small town off the beaten path, a building lot will cost as little as 3k. Building a small house in an off the beaten path could cost as little as 5k. As a rule of thumb, double all your expenses so that you don't have any surprises. You should be able to build a nice small house in the capital for 20k as long as you are there to keep the costs down by pitching in, make sure that everyone keeps working and shopping around for the materials.

    Property
The best way to buy property in Honduras is to shop around. People that want to sell fast will give large discounts that you will not be able to find on the internet. A good place for property and rentals on the internet is this site ()

This is an example of a building lot that worth around 14k in Teguciagalpa

Here's the answer to the other PM

The two areas with beaches are the North Coast (Costa Norte) and South (Golfo de Fonseco)

The North Coast a by far the most beautiful. The most popular are Omoa, Tela, La Ceiba, and Trujillo. Trujillo is the cheapest and Tela is less expensive. The Bay Islands are also in the North. Roatan is the most popular but the costs are more expensive.

The South (Golfo de Fonseca) is more off the beaten path.
Cedeño and Punta Raton are both popular beaches with Honduran locals.

Amapala on El Tigre is worth checking out. Playa Grande and Playa Negra are the both nices beaches.

Honduras tips has some great info on both San Lorenzo and Amapala.

What is access to good healthcare like in Honduras? I think this is one area where Panama beats Honduras.

btw I read in Tim Ferris' book that Argentina is a good place in terms of value for money.
