What Could it Mean if a Site is Completely Dropped From Google's Index?

Is Google going through some serious changes/updates/dance etc. right now? If one day a site has thousands of pages indexed, and then the next day the site is completely dropped from Google's index (event he homepage is not cached), but the PR stays the same, what could that mean?

Does Google once in a while lose a site? And if so, does it usually come back? What can be done to get it back in the index?

The visible Pagerank is only updated every 3 to 4 months, the real Pagerank changes realtime behind the scenes, without a URL to examine no one can give a real answer. Most likely your site was dropped due to a penalization.

Hi, I have got more or less a similar problem: I have still the same PR, all my pages are indexed, but I've totally (nearly) disappeared from google's serps.
Some guys told me they had the same concern in the past.

Yeah, that makes sense about the PageRank. IF it's a penalization, should I try a reinclusion request?

or it probably the sandbox. just give them sometime and see if it would come back at all. my sites sometime disappear from result page too and then several days later it's back.

In that case, you must have done something wrong to google, but you really do not need to worry about this, just keep making nice backlinks and unique content for your site, you will get nice traffic from your hard work.

    If that happens, it means

    1) you have messed up with your robots.txt
    2) your server is not returning valid http headers
    3) your are delisted from their index, it means

    a) spammy link schemes
    b) cloaking or stealthy redirects
    c) hidden text or links
    d) keyword stuffing
    e) linking to banned sites
    f) duplicate content etc.

And things much like the above. So probe into the case and find out what went wrong. Rectify the problem and request for re-inclusion.

    Hope this helps...

And good luck with the site!!!

    :)

It's happened to a lot of sites recently, and completely white hat sites. It appears to be a glitch of sorts, and chances are nothing you have done wrong.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a solution except wait and hope things come good.

    arunkumar2006 -

Thanks for your highly intelligent assessment, I couldn't have figured that one out without your help.

    sweetfunny -

So, you've seen this happen to others recently? You think it could be some kind of glitch with Google that just happened recently and I got caught in it?

Yes it was very lucky arunkumar2006 posted with his thoughts, it cleared up so much about ranking in Google.

Ok about the de-indexing and loosing rankings, it's very possible yours vanished in a glitch however it's hard to tell without knowing the site and what's been done to it. If you are sure beyond doubt it didn't breach any of the Webmaster Guidelines, and it's a good clean site with great content and a healthy backlink profile chances are it's a glitch.

I had one earning over $400 a day which ranked page one for more than 50,000 unique terms which vanished for every single term in about 10 minutes. Traffic went from xx,xxx per day to around 200 overnight, and the site has been dropping about 1,000 pages from the index daily despite the site having a ton of natural PR8/7/6 backlinks.

I have encountered a number of sites that had the same thing happen in recent weeks, none of which anything wrong could be found with them.

Sorry i don't have a solution, i've tried everything and i'm now waiting for a re-inclusion request to be read that i submitted about 5 days ago.

Would anyone suggest doing a reinclusion request for Google? Why or why not?
