What could cause 6 days of lost data?

I have a domain that I update content on daily, but I logged in to add stuff yesterday; and the latest entry is from the 22nd, so 6 days of data is gone.

Does anyone know what would cause that? Everything is stored in 2 mysql databases. I assume that if data were corrupted that I'd have to restore the entire thing or something, but 6 days lost?

    Anyone know how that'd happen?

You will have to talk to your host on this one, sounds like they restored your site from an old backup

    Good luck...

Yeah... backup restoration is the only thing I can think of. Especially if it spans more than one table.

That's what I figured at first too, they said that no backup was restored. I asked them to revert the site to the 27th, when I know at least some of content was up there (that's when I added a lot of it) - I'll give it another go and see what happens.

Maybe a. the person you spoke with was covering their butts and hoping you didnt have proof or b. the person you spoke to genuinely didn't KNOW that a backup had been done - i.e. someone ELSE in the organization did it without notifying them etc... either way you could definitely be getting the run-around.

try perhaps http://archive.org, maybe they will have a snapshot of your website recent enough for you to prove to them that there had been a rollback. hosts are people too, and it's pretty human to make mistakes, and even more human to try to cover your butt.

The ONLY other thing i could think of is a vulnerability. I'd change your passwords, and make sure your security is tight. Could be an SQL injection attack if you don't have your data inputs cleansed, to read more about sql injection, go to http://www.securiteam.com/securityreviews/5DP0N1P76E.html

As a precaution, i would recommend doing your own backups anytime you do a major update. I hate relying on other people almost as much as i hate redoing work because of someone else's mistake.

The stuff I lost isn't exactly critical stuff, just a news site that I run that doesn't get much traffic. I spend an hour a day on it, updating content, till after the holidays when I'll have more time. I think its just another warning that I should move the site to my VPS with webcs so I dont have to worry about this one.
