It seems (and very much so) that SEO can be quite confusing for most. Especially when dealing with things such as pr links, back links, google panda updates, why rankings disappear, why sites aren't ranked etc. So I just decided to conduct a small poll:

So what confuses you most about SEO?

    1. What types of backlinks to use
    2. Keyword Research
    3. On page SEO
    4. Getting sites indexed
    5. How to get sites ranked
    6. How to obtain Social/High Pr/Article/Press Release backlinks
    7. All of the above

I know a lot of people have been harmed by the Panda update. Chances are we all could use a little clarity on certain SEO features in our endeavor to pursue rankings, and I would be more than happy to offer some input on certain questions as well.

    * Note: Keyword Research was meant to be included in the options, but forgotten, you can just mention it :)

I totally understand that one! For that, I highly recommend using google's keyword tool. However, when you search for your keywords, search for your EXACT matches, as broad/phrase searches do not reveal exactly how many people are searching for your keyword. The problem is, most people use those searches when searching for keywords..( yikes!). When you use broad/phrase searches, you do not get an accurate result. Once you find ones you like I would type a couple strings in Google to analyze your competition:

intitle: "add keyword" inurl: "add keyword"

The lower the results, the easier it will be to rank :)

For me the most confusing thing is the different advice from "experts". Often I find statements made as though they are fact when in truth they are only opinions.

I hear you man. And you have every right to be wary of the 'experts'. They do not understand that SEO is a summation of it's parts. If anyone recommends any kind of software to speed it up or do other things 'automatically' to rank a site, i'd avoid it. I say look for those who do not regard themselves as experts and understand differences between black and white hat seo.

Sure. The best way is to treat it as a overall strategy.

SEO typically revolves around securing a variety of backlinks.

    You typically want backlinks from:
    pr links
    article directories
    directory submissions
    press releases
    pinging
    social back links

And couple this with great on page seo for your keywords and phenomenal keyword research :)

I would avoid things like link wheels and such, because when google crawls your site, you want everything to be as neat and orderly as possible.
