Both are very good. I prefer Namecheap these days,as they give free WhoisGuard privacy protection when I register a domain :D

Since you mentioned enom, you can buy a resale acc't on ebay for about $1. which gives you domains for $8.95 there, or just ask someone for a sub account for the same thing. Lower rate accounts are available, but you mentioned you wanted a cheap solution, and most 6.95 resellers want more for sub accounts.

godaddy is fine if you'd like to register domain names.
but do not host with them - it sucks and stinks to high heaven.

I'm talking from my experience here ..

Very useful thread for a newbie.

    Couple of newbie questions.

If i have an account with namecheap and if I purchase a domain that is currently with GoDaddy, are there any charges for transfer?

If I have a domain with namecheap and if I have to transfer it to a guy who has a GoDaddy account, are there any charges?

Please pardon me if my questions do not make sense.

    Thanks.

There is no actual charge for the transfer but you must register for an additional year if you transfer between GoDaddy and NameCheap. However, you will not lose anything, you get 365 days tagged to your domain name expiration date.

As for transferring from a domain name from Namecheap to someone else in GoDaddy, it can be a little tricky. The other guy needs to pay for the additional year. What you need to do is just to unlock the domain name and let him do the request. Then just answer all approval procedure when you receive the emails to being the transfer.

Since opening an account is free at Namecheap, why don't you just have him create a Namecheap account then you just do a free push of the domain name to him. In this case, no one needs to pay anything to Namecheap and the push is instant.

I use both Namecheap and GoDaddy but I have more domains with Namecheap. They're pretty good. Cheaper too.
