Regarding the websites and companies that google bought (like youtube, urchin, blogger, etc.), is there a pattern or some certain criteria that can be deducted here? I mean when does it think of buying a site/service? It certainly has all the mind, manpower and money to do anything, so when does it say "we need to buy this"?
they buy market leaders... youtube (video broadcasting) blogger (blogging) so what could be next... Digg? (social bookmarking) Dmoz? (Directory) what the heck... why not digitalpoint?
they buy lots of small companies as well you may not here of Google acquires Waterloo's Reqwireless www.garywill.com/blog/2006/01/its-official-google-acquires-waterloos.html
Is myspace owned by Google now are is it still owned by the guy that started it and has his name added in everyone' buddy list?
Recently they have acquired FeedBurner.com. They will buy a company, that could help them expand the usage of their products and services - not directly though.
Used to be the Google bought companies who were pioneering ways to index and sort the world as data. In other words, companies that furthered their business goals (by the way, grass is green, the sun is hot, and fish swim in the sea). More specifically, they would buy things that could be used to expand Googles search capabillities, such as keyhole, etc. The way I see it, Google Video was likely supposed to be the same thing, with them hoping to archive and index the worlds video footage. However, the whole thing developed into a drastically different beast, and about at the youtube buyout you can see they suddenly started changing their buyout strategies towards neat tech that, while not directly helping their original goals, lead to a lot of extra data that could be used to enhance their data services (such as the mobile software platforms, etc.). Of course they still buy data oriented projects such as urchin, its just that their buyout strategy no longer seems oriented towards overarching goals, and instead has become specific to each particular area of the company. So perhaps the question should not be "who will google buy" but rather "who will [Google division x] buy".
This is funny! Why not DP? LOL... Anyway, the big G expands their business through buying services and company on the web. They simply want to continue conquering the internet industry. The big G do not only focus on large sites, they also buy small sites that have a potential of being huge.
they wouldn't buy a forum like SP or DP. i have no idea why,but they were interested in Digg and Dmoz(sale didn't go through though). neither i would see google making a profit. What companies does google buy?that's simple, they have to be a market leader, but has no profit future.look at youtube and blogger.
Well they buy the companies which add value to their already amazing portfolio. And till now they haven't gone wrong.
