Hi all, i wanna create a social networking site with specific niche (sport). Id googling and found Elgg. Elgg is great at a glance, but I think it has not well supported (nor by its creator or community) and lack of themes variation. So, do you guys have any recommended CMS (free and paid) ??? Thanks.
- drupal (it is the best but you will need a lot of help) - socialengine - emeeting - buddypress (wordpress mu)
Thanks a lot. I'll try to research that. Btw, is it true that drupal is better than wp mu (+ buddypress) in social networking ? How do they compared ? I have one site built with drupal, but never tried organic groups module.
these websites built on drupal: http://www.forensicscommunity.com/ http://www.ilovebolly.com/ http://www.coldcast.co.uk/ http://www.nowpublic.com/ http://www.ifood.tv/ the best feature of drupal is, you do not have any limits. you can do everything. but as i said before, you need help. because drupal is not as easy as wordpress or wp mu.
i think that joomla will be nice too there are several addons for joomla to build social networking for example CB (free) and others
yes, i'm sure as general drupal dan wordpres are good like joomla but i think that for social networking, joomla have to many free addons for that and don't need hard working to build that. just my opinion, sorry
I use and create some Joomla site before. But after I learn Drupal (even a little), I dont think I will go back and use Joomla anymore. CB is nice in Joomla, but I dont feel it solid enough. (honestly, far from it)
if we tell about the plugins (addons), joomla is the best. joomla has XXXX addons free and commercial.
Hi, First thing you need to do is make a list of all the features you'll need. rss, blogging, video, photo, audi, chat, msg, etc, and compare that to the different solutions out there. Here are a few others: kootali, isocial, Dzoic handshakes, phpfox, dolphin, efriends, etano, socialware. etc If you're looking for something simple that is hosted (not on joomla), try Ning. Then try to find an overview of the different solutions out there. take a script that has active developer community forum on the vendor website to help you if yout get stuck. contact me if you need more info.
Depending on your budget determines what you will be able to achieve with your website. If you have a low budget, then looking at something like Joomla or Elgg would be the best option or probably even Dolphin. If you have a larger budget then my company have a number of options with iSocial, Kootali and Rayzz. Let me know if you want more info about these.
Drupal hands down is the best and was made for multi-user environments. Don't mess with joomla and buddypress. But be advised that Drupal isn't a website-in-a-box solution, it requires some effort and that is why it allows you to create a unique social site. Plus the drupal support is great via forums, 3rd party sites, and the IRC channels. DO IT! Stay away from Dolphin...support sucks and it's written horribly!
After spending some time in researching those options, I think i choose Drupal. Thanks for all recommendations, really helpful.
In the meantime, if anybody would be so kind to post a review on these scripts? Please see the social networking software user review site in my signature.
Drupal is the best if you have lot of time ( if you build yourself ) or Lot of money ( outsourcing ) , after that you need a dedicated server to run it with all the modules installed. It is SLOW on shared hosting. I was building a site based on drupal had done a lot still it was nothing really worth showing, then i saw vb4 and i bought it and am satisfied. Try VBulletin 4 , its i belive good enough.
They use ioncube for protecting their files and it gives you less freedom. You are also forced to make major changes in your sytem settings. This also means that you are forced to use Kootali's support. The slowest support system I have experienced.
