What can I use as a substitue for Paneer Cheese?

    Hello,

I love to cook and one of my favorite dishes to make is Palak Paneer with Basamati Rice and Naan. All home made from scratch.

Now that I am back to living in Missouri I cannot find Paneer cheese anywhere and I am wondering if anyone knows of a good substitute, something that Wal-Mart or a small town grocery store might carry.

I tried a few other cheeses but they all melt when I brown the sides.

    Thanks for your help,
    Rich

OK, one last try. My last bumb didn't bump it because it was during the DP down time/that happend yesterday. I don't want to have to join a cookers forum just for this one question.. But I really want to make this dish for a date that I have coming over next weekend.

    Many Thanks,
    GG

No. I do like tofu but I want cheese and tofu is nothing like paneer cheese.. LOL Paneer is sort of a crubled, compressed cheese that you cube and fry on all sides in olive oil, with out the cheese even starting to melt. Then you add it to the palak paneer dish.. It tastes.. ohh so good and palak paneer just wouldn't be the same with tofu, IMO

Thanks so much for the reccomendation though, rep to be added:)

Right, I know, I eat matter paneer all the time, and one time I could not get paneer because the Indian store was closed and I stir fried the tofu and added a lot of spices to it, and I have to say, if you spice it right, it is a viable substitute. It's not cheese, but you can make it taste like cheese if you are generous with the spices ... good luck anyhow - I know that can all be a challenge getting the right ingredients!
