You should always think about the risk in such work that's why I take a deposit a % of the quote price.

Did you keep a copy of the instruction to make a start; if you did basically you have an enforceable contract. Unfortunately the costs involved in getting him to pay will almost certainly outweigh the value of the work done. There will always be people like this about and the days of doing any sort of work on trust are gone; always get a proportion of the payment up front, only provide watermarked images for approval and don't release anything until full payment is received. By the way have you let your fellow contestants on SitePoint know about this Weasel.

Best thing to do in future is make sure you have rock solid proof of an established contract - emails would be a start, the terminology would be important, a fac or scanned document would be better. Create your own 'standard' pdf style contract for hiring your services that people must download, sign, date and then fac or scan and email back to you before you do anything in future.

The problem with a lot of people is, they don;t realise that there are so many time-wasters in the world, that the attraction or 'half-promise' of money in a day or week or so seems great, and they jump in head first.

You need to adopt an attitude AT ALL TIMES that you have no money until it is in your bank account, and that you have NO DEALS until you have the signed paper back in yoru hands. UNTIL THEN... you have nothing.

Work from this starting point in future, and you will not go too far wrong.

As for this one.. this one looks like part of your learning curve.
