if by 'a' you actually mean 1...then it won't really do anything for you..

now if you put your foot to the metal and get a bunch....edu and gov links are given 'extra credit' by the search engines when determining what score you get for backlinks...

so if you can get them...get them!

Matt Cutts claims that Google doesn't favor any domain extension over the others. Yet, there's some decent evidence as well as expert "testimony" to the contrary.

Having said this, in my research your goal shouldn't be to get as many "good" (.edu .gov) links as possible...Rather, you should be looking for a "natural" pattern.

I believe that a ratio of about 30-50 "average" links per 1 "good" good link is optimal.

IOW, if you have 2 .edu links, you should concentrate on getting (about) 60-100 "normal/average" links.

The same with PR. While it may be tempting to have 50 PR6 links, you're probably better off with a more "natural" mixture.

Linkage patterns are pretty easy to detect and anyone trying to "game" the system will stand out like a sore thumb. It just isn't natural to have 50 PR6 links and none from PR1-5, for example. The same for .edu/.gov compared to other links...

If you get any PR9 -- .edu home page linking you --you will get PR6/7 with a single backlink -if you site is related to education.:D

But its also true for others sites. Just get 1 strong PR9 backlink --and you are PR6:p

Sorry forgot to mention that --if the backlink is PR4 or less --it will not help you in anyway for your PR:eek:

Google does not care the tld of the domain much , I have site that has pr3 backlink from an .edu , It did not made a significant change but as said if you can get them , why leave them.

But if you can get a homepage link that'll sure do a lot change :)

I have heard that Google favors domain names with special extension like .gov and .edu. Is this true?

That is my take on it has well.

I have actually evidence of this, but due to client relation restrictionsI am unable to share this information publicly.

But what I can say is that .gov and edu domains need much less keyword anchored inbounds to rank well.

.edu and .gov will not do much for your PR they are counted in that sense just like any other link, they pass the same link juice. Then can however increase your trustrank...

Most .edu sites has student blogs. Just put comments on them and link them to your site. Do NOT spam. Give good comments.

I have read that .edu site is consider by google as authority site. But I think not all .edu site are authority site. So you should also check the site if it's good and has quality content.
