I have used both Blogger and Wordpress, and I much prefer WP. More functions. I self-host, which again provides more functionality than just hosting on their server.

Yes I recommend using a self hosted wordpress blog if you can. If you can't then I like wordpress. You just have to be careful as they will delete your blog if you post affiliate links all over it.

If you are looking for a free one, Blogger.com gives you more freedom. It allows all kinds of advertising and affiliate links. It is easy to use but limited in the amount of themes they offer. It is easy to place items throughout the blog without any coding.

The best overall blogs are those hosted on your own hosting with your own domain name. With hosting so cheap, you can host your own WordPress blog for about $30-$35 a year. This gives you the best overall freedom and you can add tons of add-on and have a choice of thousands of themes.

I use both kinds but highly prefer the self hosted WordPress blogs.

Wordpress is what I use, and I love it. It's highly customizable if you know your way around HTML (themes, addons, widgets), free, and has a great look to it.

If HTML is an issue for you, blogspot is super easy and customizable with absolutely NO HTML knowledge. It also has great themes and addons.

I think that Wordpress is more professional though.

Wordpress, either Self Hosted or on Wordpress.com. Either way proved good to me. Maybe it'll help you too.

I agree, there's nothing like hosting your own wordpress blog on your own domain.

This has been discussed many times, but again, i would vote for blogspot for its easy to use features and customization and for adding any ad networks and most of all its free and always on...

This seems to be a question many ponder. All the answers so far seem to sum up the basic debate, so I just want to add one or two points. You say you want to create a new blog to promote a new site, which sounds like you basically want to create a blog to funnel traffic to your new site. Makes sense then that you host it on a free platform instead of spending weeks trying to get traffic to your new blog, in order to get traffic to your new site. I'm not too knowledgeable on the subject, but would a blog on wordpress.com or blogspot.com not be indexed quicker than a self-hosted blog (without any additional effort on your side, seeing that the domain on which you publish your free blog is an established site)? Also, for traffic funneling purposes Squidoo is another valid alternative, and/or any of a number of wiki sites where you can publish your content for free.

Either Blogger or Wordpress. However, self hosted Wordpress is the best probably if you can afford to spend some money on hosting.

To start I would suggest blogspot since it's free and easy to set up. If want something with more control get wordpress and host it.

A self-hosted WordPress is the way to go. You will have complete control over just about everything that way.

If you self-host WordPress on your site and set it to "ping" when you update it you can usually be indexed in less than 24 hours. Especially if you bookmark your site a few places.

For free third party sites I like to use Squidoo, Hubpages, my.opera, xanga, and weebly. Each gets good rankings in Google if you take time to update it regularly.
