Is more the better or are you selective?

My attitude has always been the more the better. Something I am starting to take more into consideration though is paying to have my listing in some of the more respected directories.

    For me it all depends.
For free directories the more is always the better.
For paid, I look for quality directories, and even though I have spent a lot of money on directory submissions, I didn't submit to that many.
I looked for quality over quantity.

For free directories I fire & forget ... you never know what the future holds for a directory, so the more the better.

For paid I select only those where my link will be visible to both humans and 'bots & I think I'm getting good VFM.

Used to submit to all both Free & Paid, but for a number of months now have concentrated on quality paid directories :)

And the feedback and the quantity of submissions we receive have increased 3 fold so for sure it has paid off to be selective

We have to submit to our budget too :)

But if you have unlimited time and funds the more the better

    Hehehe

It seems that we have same attitude. For paid directories --I do a lot of research before submitting my sites but for Free directories --I just don't care --The More The Better.:D

I guess everyone is the same when selecting paid directories
I make it a point to look here seomoz.org/page-strength
to make a buying decision , the number of backlinks, the age of domain , etc are given weightage.

Prefer the paid directories these days where I get the advantage. I rarely submit to 100% free directories anymore. Having your site listed in directories where others visit to see who's spending money on promotion and who's not has definitive benefits.

Taking this approach is a slower way to gain backlinks, but I'm in this for a very long time anyway.

As with most things in life, I'd opt for quality over quantity.

I look at it as a job not unlike mucking out horses. I have kinda the same expression on my face for both tasks, anyway.

I am selective, to the extent that if a free directory takes me more than 30 seconds to submit to, or if it appears useless and spammy, then I generally won't bother.

Definitely should be selective when submitting to Paid Directories. As for the free, submit to all

For my last two directories I've done both. Paid $50 for 1000 free submissions and submitted myself to quality directories.

I submit to as many free directories as I can. After all I have nothing to lose. With paid directories it's different because money is not endless....So I try to do the best with the money I want to spend. A little research is mandatory. Also I try to work with people I (relatively) "know" It's always better if you come to exchange some mails with the owner and get to know him a little, or if you have worked with him again in the past. They inspire more trust.

That is the logic that attracts me to submit to free directories --what with so many free directories coming and going off everyday!
