There are many directories out there.

My question is, if you offer your links either free, or if you charge...what are the responses?

e.g if you offer reg links for say $1.00 do people pay that? or do you tend to get less submissions?

same with recriprical do alot of people tend to do that?

I have a directory on one of my sites started out free and got swamped switched to paid and I get a few here and there. I think it's about the quality of the directory.

I'm working on a new directory now which will be very organized and it will start out paid and I hope the quality of that offsets the fee.

    A couple considerations...

Free: A ton of submissions, every day, every night
$1: Few submissions, even though people still submit. It's a nice way to avoid some spam
Reciprocal: I hate it, personally I prefer to pay than to have a reciprocal link, not because of the reciprocal itself, but because then you have to manage it.

Suggestion: If you're going to start a directory (yet another one around) I suggets you open freebies for a couple of days and then turn it payed, as I don't think managing a free directory is worth anything.
Also, if you consider Adsense for example to monetize your directory, then forget... It's really not worth the worries for various reasons. ;)

    Hope it helps!

I agree. Im trying to make my directory look as best as it can. Right now its free but im getting literally 100+ a day submissions. I will be possibly charging a very low amount soon. I also need to filter out alot of MFA's that snuck in.

but this is my first try at a directory: http://www.mydentify.com

Im taking many things into consideration. One of my big things is to try to NOT use adsense on this site...but who knows..

    Thanks,
    -Tim

My directory offers free and paid positions. I average 160 submissions a day for the last month. Paid links are placed above the free submissions where they can benefit from PR and exposure. My strategy of keeping my directory free and paid is starting to pay off as my directory grows.

Some of the more popular categories have 5 plus pages with 10 links per page and that's where submitters are starting to see the advantage of paying the small fee to be closer to the top of the category. If I had it to do over again, I think I would do it this way again. Everything just seems to grow proportionate and steadily.

Ive only offered paid submissions, so far the response has been good, the directory is less than a month old :) But of course, all i have done this past month is work on that site...

What about a directory of directories?

If it is an established directory with good pagerank should I allow free reciprocal links or should I charge a small amount instead?

Would be interesting to know what you guys think.

I love that niche, This is only me I might go paid only because it is very targeted unlinke general directories. Not only will they get pr but also traffic.

    Again that's just me

I recently took over a directory of directories and it has free reciprocal links. I personally think reciprocal links are very annoying to deal with.

 Can't decide if I should change all links to paid.

At the moment people can get link on a PR3 page for just $17.

Personally, I will not try recriprical, it is not easy to manage, maybe it needs more time to monitor the recriprical links ;)

No one does reciprocals anyway nowadays... unless its sitewide for sitewide or homepage for homepage.

Free directory can be headache...so many links waiting for review, it makes the owner become lazy. One day, I will turn all my directories into paid ones.

I only have paid options in my directories.

    All start from $7.99+

Less links but less maintenance. And more time for marketing it rather then digging through 1000 of free submissions. :)

Reciprocals on Directories of Directories really only work for general directories.

As a niche directory owner in a fairly small niche, I simply don't have a ideal place to list a directory of directories. The reciprocal requirement would often serve to keep niche sites from participating.

I have seen quite a few of these directory of directories sites not listing niche sites and have wondered if the inability to cross promote is at the heart of that decision.

    Hello...

I was getting swamped with free submits, I made the vilesilencer list and at times would hit 200-300 and it was to much work for the little return in $$ so after most of the catagories had a few links in them i decided to go Paid link directory.

How many you decide to let in is really up to you...

The Paid Directory option is Better I think when you have established PR. You will get the ones seeking PR that will pay for getting linked to a site offering them PR.
Im hopeing for some christmas love from google this next update to really Give back to those that have been submitting thier sites since i went paid directory . You will also get submits from webmasters and business people who look for a "Quality directory" as well as thier faith in someone to operate those Quality Directories,by promoting as well as advertising and link purchases.

    thx

I have ONLY paid submissions on my directory. It gets about 5 submissions per week, but since they are paid, most are good, quality submissions.

On a Side Note* I know the sites listed in my directory are getting traffic from their submissions. A quick look at the "hits" count shows that the #1 spot has received over 1000 hits from my directory in the past 6 months.
