Hi, My site is pretty slow on shared hosting (not the one in sig) and it runs IPB 3. Anyways, I am looking for something that can support a pretty big forum (not big yet) and make sure it runs fast. I hear hostgator is great all around but im not really sure. Is host rocket any good with servers (it would be easier for me to upgrade)? Also, is running a server much different then from shared hosting?
Yes, there is big difference. While you don't need to administer your server when using shared hosting, dedicated server needs somebody who will install all the software which you want to use, who understands the security and will solve the problems which may happen. So you need to understand how it works or pay somebody to do it for you. There are also virtual private servers - VPS. Did you consider to use it? If you run your forum on the shared host now you probably don't need dedicated server now. There is a big difference in the price of VPS and dedicated server.
While your site is running slow in a shared hosting environment, upgrading to VPS or Dedicated Server may not be needed at the moment. Your host could have oversold their server, which cause your site crawling or it could be disk IO issue if there are a lot of computation needed on SQL processing. Hostgator/Hostrocket is definitely suitable for small sites. Migrating to a host who does not oversell, and uses SCSI/SAS harddisk will help you improve your site performance significantly. If you could provide more details such as your site usage, concurrent users, etc, this will help us to advise better on your current situation.
My site is brand new, but IPB 3 takes a lot of resources. Some guy on IPS told me the whole IPS community runs on a VPS, which is awesome if I could do that. So is it really that hard to run a server? Like i am very tech savvy. Is there a guide online that I could follow to install a secure server?
Considering your site is brand new, it will not take out a lot of system resources, unless you have added badly coded plugins into it. We do have a customer who runs IPB blog and IPB3 with plugins such as chat (20 online users pack), arcade, support helpdesk and have no issue running it in a shared hosting environment. As mentioned, your host could have overloaded the server. Running a server involves a lot of work. If you have to read from guide online on how to secure a server, my suggestion is to get a fully managed VPS/Dedicated Server. Security is not just reading guide online, its about several years of experience in this field.
What is your site dlanor? I looked into fully managed and ill probably upgrade to that later. Right now my interest is in VPS.
VPS= Ryleejames Dedicated= Snoork hosting...they are currently out of dedicated's...may 21 they'll be having more in stock
Can you please post your current starts in here to have a a look? I think you need to make sure which server configuration are you going to search for. Then start your search only.
Its a brand new forum, but it will grow at a massive pace because we are transferring members from another forum.
This may be answer to your question. The another forum is hosted on the shared hosting or on the VPS/dedicated server? If you run it on the shared host check out your control panel if it offers the load stats. How many % of CPU does it require?
It runs on a dedicated but the owner doesn't really know how to optimize it. I think im going with a plan from knownhost, the VS4
With any virtual Private Server you have control and power like dedicated one but still pay low amount of money. I won't recommend YOU my own hosting but if anyone else want excellent costumer support and VPS specification for the price of packet of cigaretes that we check my sig and will thank me later..
I would recommend to go with a VPS. I host most of my forums with Lunarpages, and I find it very reliable. Also they have their own easy to use control panel.
Hi, For VPS servers I would recommend Tech-Hosts. I can't post links yet so you will need to Google them.
