    Very interesting idea! Thanks.

Maybe an incentive if they tell a friend too, such as a gift certificate, would work too.

Not if you are spending more than you are taking in.

    Absolutely,

You need to stand in your customers shoes so to speak. What is valuable to them?

You could tell the new member that for every sale they refer you'll pay them commission. Basically it's like a mini affiliate program.

In my case, I've been sending emails to college and non-college clubs for the specific sports.

I can tend to get a few customers, sponsor a club, sometimes get a backlink, and possibly get someone to write an article for me. :)

Do you find that people read/respond to these emails very often?

    For ebooks I like ebay.

You can offer them a free ebook in the auction template if they sign up to your mailing list. You can also make them download the ebook at your website. You can use your about me page to advertise you webpage. When they won the auction you can send them an email where to download the ebook with your website in the signiture.

    Regards,
    Timmy Deleu

Probably about 10 percent or so, maybe more. But when they do, I usually am able to form a good relationship with them. I give them a discount, sometimes sponsor them with money and items, and I get traffic and a backlink in return. :)
