What are the top reasons why page rank is important? Or is it just a visual cue of how many sites link to your site?

I was talking with my brother and telling him about the pageranks on some of my sites and when he said "so what. how does that benefit you monetarily? If someone wants to find in me, and they type my name into a search engine and I'm at the top of the results. So why do I need a higher page rank."

I struggled to come up with an amazing answer for why page rank is important. Perhaps it's not important in his circumstance.

Help me come up with an amazing reason why page rank is important as I struggeled to do so.

(I know this thread makes me sound like a noob, but please bare with me)

PR is only a measurment by Google of your websites page ranking.... if you were turning up in the top of Google search results for your targetted keywords then you do not need a high page rank, because you probably already have one! :)

If you are kicking butt in the SERPs, then I don't think you want a page rank of like 9 or 8. I'm sure Google monitors those sites a little closer for foul play.

Your amazing answer is......... drum roll............. links

if you have an extremely high PR your outgoing links are worth monetary compensation :)

who would pay 200 bucks a month to a PR 9 financial site for a homepage link? probably a lot of people.

Pagerank in and of itself doesn't matter. It CAN represent the number and quality of links pointing to a page, which is relevant, but it can easily be manipulated. You can easily buy pagerank these days. Worry more about getting quality links and having a good website.

Although one of the side benefits is that a high pagerank will make people be willing to pay more for a link on your site if you rent links. Otherwise pagerank is just a general indicator of the links to the site.

I think your brother is totally right. For many small businesses all that really matters is whether someone that has heard of them will be able to find them in the serps.
Since pagerank only very indirectly influences the organisation of the serps - pagerank is really not that important.
On the other hand, when selling links it is one of the only safe numbers we've got. Trust rank (which is more important then pagerank) is not available in a toolbar, so link selling goes by pagerank and page impressions.

Many people will tell you that PR is useless and that no good webmaster will care much about it.

For me, (a webmaster), I care about PR because indirectly it tells me how well I am doing.
If I have a good PR then I know I am doing something right, sites are linking to me, (and not just directories). And indirectly people are visiting me.
All those who tell you how little PR matters cannot, (easily), get a PR5+.
The point is that there are no PR0 popular good sites, (or they won't be PR0 for very long).

So PR, in itself, is nothing more than an indication of how many people are linking to you and how 'linked' they themselves are.
But if you have a good PR then you know you are doing the right thing.

PR is one of the many tools a, (good?), webmaster knows how to use.

Although PR might actually not matter as much. Everyone thinks its the most important aspect and therefore this assumption is what makes PR is valuable.

I don't bother much with PR. If someone types "dog agility" into Google my site comes up as the second or third link on the first page of results. If I do the same search for the UK it comes up first. I'm happy that people looking for information on dog agility can find my site using the most obvious search phrase.

PR is both. Long term if your visitors come from SEs, then it's very important. But if your site depends not much on SEs, then it could be just a No.

Since PR is percieved as having value it's valuable fo selling links. You can make a nice passive income selling links if you have some high PR sites.

For search rankings I dont think it really means anything anymore. If I have a page with a PR7 and i make a new site, I can give the new site a PR6 (even a PR7 if the site has few outbound links) with just one link from my PR7 site, so how is that an accurate measure of link popularity?

It's not just based on the number of backlinks. Its the total points you earn from backlinks. The higher the points you score, the higher PR your web page will get.

Page rank does matter and is important. The higher your rank, the higher the chance of people clicking your link.

Pagerank is the general algorithm of Google which ranks a site on the basis of its back links. In fact the main element of allocating a Pagerank to any webpage is the number of sites linking to the webpage and their own Pagerank value. This can also be taken as a popularly contest between high interest sites.

Page rank is important because if your site has the higher page rank it means that your site is more credible more mature and more trustworthy in the eye of search thus they put their trust on these sites and have greater chances that will appear in the serp more often.
