1. Never believe what you read about SEO without testing it yourself.

2. Never believe what you hear about SEO unless the person who is telling you has optimized 100+ sites or is a Google engineer, in which case you can half believe them.

3. Never have less than 100 of your own test sites on which you can experiment, white hat, black hat or any hat.

4. Never experiment on your clients sites.

5. Never let a search algorithm patent be published without reading and understanding what it says.

1. try to read everything you can on SEO, be a tedious lurker on DP for a while read every 100+ lists of how to blablabal
2. use your common sense to understand what is just spam from people who wish to be considered authority.
3. figure out what who are your competition and beat them at their own game. (an over used cliche, but for a real example, if your niece sells plastic fluid proof bedsheets and no one on the top 10 has nothing but products pages and plenty of back links, that's where you should be aiming and not at pounding what meta tag is fit for you.
4. Done be afraid to ask stupid newbie questions, but don't take the answers of others as an absolute truth.
5. try not to spam, spammers have a very short whatchamacallit

My top seo tips is don't ever try to sell seo services if you don't have any site in the first SERPS for at least one keyword phrases that has seo in it.

 

I'll just mention one of immense importance — the application throughout your website of good keyword research:

• Put your chosen keyword(s) in your title.
• Put your chosen keyword(s) in the filepath of your URL, such as: www(dot)domainname.com/keyword(s).html
• Sprinkle your well-researched, chosen keyword(s) throughout the text of your page.
• Use a few variations of your keyword(s) in the anchor text on inbound links from directories, etc.

You will find that these simple actions with properly researched and wisely chosen keywords will have a wonderful effect on your search engine rankings. Follow many of the suggestions other posters have made, too. But do not neglect keywords as a centerpiece of your SEO efforts. Search engines find you through keywords.

No 2 - Title tag and Meta description esential (meta description should be first line of content)
No 3 - H2 title tags lang tail relevant keywords
No 4 - Relevant, quality content with good grammer and clearly written. Should be informative and accurate making people as well as search engines interested.
No 5 - Install a Wordpress blog on the same domain to support your site and write about each piece of new content with a link back to it - then do a similar thing with backlink building.
