    Hey,

Have a look at webmin or virtualmin if its a vps - this will take the headache out of a lot of the setup.
Next - make sure you have a backup strategy!
Firewall - be sure to have a firewall setup and close any ports which you dont require services for.

With all due respect however I think you should consider renting someones services, for the initial setup at least - OR - buy a small vps to test with, as you can reinstall these a lot easier than a true dedicated server

You are best off using a hosting service if you don't have the knowledge to set up a webserver.

    Best for your users.

I would recommend that you get a server with a dedicated KVM/IPMI - you would need that, for example, if you accidentally lock yourself with wrong firewall configuration, as well for easier system management.

If you're not comfortable with the command line (which is most likely the case), I would recommend that you install a control panel (like cPanel or DirectAdmin (paid) or Virtualmin/Webmin (free) ).

For a firewall module, you could use CSF - it does have an easy to use interface for webmin.

You could also install a GUI and VNC - it will take a lot of server resources, but could possibly make some of the tasks easier (again, if you're not comfortable with the command line). However, in the long term, this could have a negative effect - I would recommend that you "learn the command line".

Also, if you're new and you want to manage the server yourself, this means that you're willing to learn a lot of new things, which is great!
