What are the skills required for an SEO job?

    Hi,
I'm a full time dedicated freelance writer. Now I'm hardly getting around $32/ day. That too after spending the whole day in front of my system. And this caused some health problems also. But I cant stop working. I'm looking for something else in internet that pays more. Remember I'm a big zero on the programming side.

Recently I noticed the increasing demand for SEO experts in internet. I know a bit about search engine optimization, but I'm not aware of the skills that one should develop in order to grow as a good SEO expert.

All I need is getting some experience, for that I'll work for a very cheap price, just like writing for $1/100 words now..lol

What is the job profile/responsibilities of an SEO consultant?
How an I enter into this job?
What are the existing salary/payment in this field?

    Waiting for your replies,

    Thanks in advance,
    Annie

    Hey there,

well SEO work has always been in demand and will stay in demand as long as there are some hungry webmasters (or business owners) around, having their eyes set on that sweet top position spot in Google.
Having said that, SEO consultancy is not the easiest job around. It is not the hardest one either, yet you can usually spot the pros from the amateurs. A tip for you, do not be an amateur. Here is how you should proceed, from my point of view:

    1. Get yourself a website in a moderately competitive niche. Better yet, get yourself a couple of websites, so that you have more playing space.
    2. Experiment. First, get the basics down. Read up on the basics of SEO, on-site and off-site optimization. Apply them to the site/s and evaluate the results. Experiment some more. Familiarize yourself with a new SEO technique every other day and try to apply it on your site. Get your site sandboxed, try out some black hat techniques (you need to know them, if not for practical reasons but just for the ducation), try a completely white hat approach. Try some combination of the two. Find out about linkwheeling, link farming, second level link wheeling, link pushing, etc (if you don't know what I'm talking about then you have a lot to learn...)

Most importantly, apply all the methods to your own sites. This way, you will know what is actually happening. You goal should be to get one of your websites into the top spot of Google.

Here is a general (very, very general) outline of what you should learn:
-Basic on SEO (keyword optimization and all that)
-Basic link building (the simple stuff, PRing, article linking, web 2.0 links, forum links)
    -Site evaluation
    -SMM and its automation
-Indexing (of backlinks and site. How can you make your site and backlinks stick)
-Link wheeling (in all its implication. This means link farming, pushing and all that)
    -EDU pushes
    -Link pushes
    -Farming

There is a lot more, but you'll get there if you are persistent enough. Just get a website first and start experimenting.
In terms of income, when I was doing freelance SEO consulting, I would charge around $500-$600 per month. But then again, I had some experience working as the SEO guy for a web-marketing company over in the UK.

Anyhow, the best of luck to you and send me a PM if anything is unclear!
    Cheers

I have been thinking about offering myself as a SEO expert. I can pretty easily get top 10 rankings for good 2-3 word keywords but how much do you have to offer in return for 500-600$ a month? Like how many rankings or traffic?

Well SEO is broken up into 2 parts, the brain and the worker. The brain must look for analyze and find out what exactly needs to be done. This is very hard to find. The worker is anyone that blogs, chats, does backlinks etc. If you do full SEO you have to be able to analyze and find reasons of difference and change between websites in keyword positions, if you will be a worker then you will need a lot of time and that is about it.

Very good advices from just a few posts. I'm no SEO expert, but I know what exactly works for what kinds of sites of blogs. Learning SEO by ourselves by doing what soneat has mentioned probably is the best way, although it takes so much time. Another way to go about it is to find someone who can mentor you till you get the steps right.

All the best in your learning.

I think with SEO, if you are going to be targetting businesses, rather than people just running a site from their bedrooms, you need to be able to demonstrate that you know why they're doing it. Businesses want leads. That means not only "ranking in Google," but researching the keywords well enough to ensure the MAXIMUM conversion and then advising the client on how the site can achieve the optimum conversion potential.

Being number 1 in Google is no good if being there isn't going to result in any extra traffic and sales!

All of the things that have been mentioned above are all useful , but since you are a writer its not hard for you to get your site to the top if you want to be a seo... remember content is the kings all kills all that shit... about backlinks and many more ,, you many wonder why some site has a higher pr than other when it has a very low links, simple they have a very unique content . when i see contents , they are 100 percent unique

To become good at SEO you ideally need to learn HTML and learn how it needs to be structured to create a well optimised webpages. Learn about how to evaluate how successful a site is, and you can reverse engineer these results to create a successful site. Then you need to learn about off page optimisation: linkbuilding starategies, types, and techniques.

One of the things that I did a couple of years ago, was look to see what other skills were being required from SEOs. I saw some jobs promoted as web development orientated jobs with SEO tagged on, and others that were promoted as specialist SEO consultants. The reference to SEO is crossing-up in more role descriptions (PR, marketing, copy writing and website management) so it’s all the more important to get a good understanding of how the SEO labor market is getting on and what is required of us (also see the 80+ SEO interview questions article).
